As bulletproof as some of these personal accounts are of the effects of this tax, I found a scientific study (imagine that!) done on this:

PLOS ONE: The Consequences of High Cigarette Excise Taxes for Low-Income Smokers

One of the conclusions is that low income people are not very responsive to higher cigarette taxes and ends up spending more of their income on cigarettes instead of smoking less or quitting. Also, the tax has decreased smoking in NY overall.

It seems to me that alot of the politicians that push for these higher taxes on cigarettes are the same ones pushing for legalised gambling. Cigarettes are bad so let's tax them. Meanwhile lets legalize casinos.

and while all of this no smoking thing is great, just what is going to happen to all the tobacco and related companies that make cigaretes should everyone deceide to stop smoking?

say all of a sudden we become a smoke free world, which i would love, but does anyone think for even a second the tobacco companies will say, yeah, were done, were out of business....ok, lets pack it in and call it a day....

it is never going to happen.

the tax thing is just a money making scam that the government knows people are addidted and will buy them no matter what.

so then is tobbacco isnt taxed heavily, will they go for soda next?

it is sad that everything here in this country is about greed and money.

This does not make a compelling argument for lowering taxes. That people are stupid enough to go broke smoking is no reason to make cigarettes cheaper for other people to take up the habit. The money from the taxes is used to provide free medicaid for these people

why should that matter? Companies whose products are legislated out of the market tend to go out of business, but to answer your question all the big tobacco companies are going all in on e-cigs

Completely ridiculous, conspiracy theories like this are actually prety common in popular culture but have no basis in reality. There is no "scam", what there is actually is a huge public burden to treat all these low income smokers for emphysema, bronchitis, atherosclerosis, and lung cancer. What's sad is people who smoke

High taxes, high minimum prices, or something else? I don't know, but fewer New Yorkers of all ages are smoking.

"New York's adult smoking rate fell to record low of 14 percent in 2010, said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has led the city’s effort to curb tobacco use for the past nine years.

The rate dropped from 22 percent in 2002, meaning about 450,000 fewer people are smoking, the mayor said. New York’s rate among high school students decreased to 7 percent last year from 18 percent in 2001, as the U.S. rate fell to 19 percent from 29 percent, he said. The smoking decline will translate to 50,000 deaths prevented by 2052, Bloomberg said."

I smoke but I buy my cigarette in a military PX. A pack outside the military PX is $13.50 without tax. In the PX, they're $6.50.

This war against cigarettes has gotten ridiculous IMO. Quite possibly one of the most petty political agendas of the last decade.

If I smoked (which I don't), I think I'd make a quarterly trip to Virginia, load up, and keep 'em in the freezer till I needed them.

Please. Where is the tax on alcohol for people on ALL incoms that constant get DUIs, liver issues, etc?

Cigarettes is an easy market to manipulate since smoking has gotten more taboo than drinking. So not as many people care. But I feel like if you're going to tax cigarettes for health hazards, why not do other non-essential hazardous habits?

It's just ridiculous. Last I checked, smoking isn't inclusive to people with low income. Smoking has become a lot less socially acceptable, so what's the beef? It's a money opportunity and nothing more. It's not attached to ACA as subsidy to pay for ur future medical issues, so I don't buy this "going for health causes" thing. On top of it, the tax itself isn't even federal, it's by state which makes it even more strange.

I can understand taxing smokers, but the tax is 50% over the actual cost of cigarettes. It's theivery. If I didn't buy cigarettes from the PX, I would be buying tobacco and rolling my own.
