Supermario...saying what I like about Mott Haven is not hyping it....it is saying what I like. Saying that 95% of white people coming to the Bronx will be beaten, mugged or worse..IS hype and BS....but somehow you dont say thats hype huh?

I think I have made myself very clear. I never claimed it was the top 10 safest places...nor do I say you should come here with 10 pounds of gold jewelry, flash $100 bills...and leave your Bentley parked in front of the projects unlocked and running....and life is perfect. I do challenge the assertion though that it is some sort of warzone, with people dodging bullets on thier way to work in the mornings, constant gangwars 24/7, and anyone that is white entering the community being beaten, mugged, attacked, or abused in some way. All of THAT is hype...but again...you don't call that hype...interesting.

Mott Haven has become far more liveable and safer...and my experiences as a LONGTIME resident have been positive for the most part...and the area continues to improve. Does this mean everyone will move here and have a perfect life? Heck no...nor do I assert that...but I do say the NEGATIVE HYPE is ridiculous..and the BS sterotypes that Mead and others promote is WRONG...and any reasonable person knows it.

True there are places in the Bronx that I care not to visit...187th and Valentine being a shining example...but what reason would anyone have to go there anyway? There are bad PARTS of the Bronx..as there are BAD parts of just about every area...and the Bronx has alot of bad apples...but the vast majority are hardworking families trying to live their lives amongst these people and negative BS that is spewed by people like Mead.

So you think if I just wandered around Mott Haven I'd be fine? Mind you my family is from Ireland, so I'm not just white, I'm hella-white. I think within an hour of me wandering around something would probably go down, and I'm a fairly big guy mind you.

I have no problem hanging out in non-white neighborhoods. I actually go to this BBQ place in Mount Vernon ever since I visited MoGridders. I go over to Wakefield all the time for West Indian food.

However there is a big difference between areas like Mount Vernon/Wakefield and your average South Bronx hood. The rate of crime is much lower up in Wakefield than it is down in the South Bronx.

To be honest I've never seen a non-white person get beaten in my area for wandering around. Maybe that's an Italian thing? They're big on using bats to beat people in general; I've never somethign like that in my area though.

In all my lifetime living in NYC, I've never witnessed a White person get beat up for walking into "the wrong neighborhood." I've lived in non-White neighborhood's for the greater portion of my life.

I'd say going into any neighborhood your not really familiar with greatly increases your chances of being mugged or whatever, especially at night.

You won't find me just strolling into Woodlawn for instance at like 1:00 A.M. Not by myself at least.

Thats probably because white people generally don't wander around non-whtie neighborhoods. Most people had experiences that were bad back in the 1950s and 1960s so that people have developed defense mechanisms in order to protect themselves such as not hanging out in non-white neighborhoods or fleeing out ot the suburbs.

Beyond the little group of Crazies hanging out in Port Morris, how many white people do you see in the South Bronx who aren't either cops or teachers?

In contrast, non-white people wander in white areas all the time, and generally nothing happens, with a few notable exceptions (Bensonhurst, Howard Beach). I see random black and hispanic people meandering in my neighborhood, and yet nothing ever happens to them.

Mead...as I said...I welcome you to my neighborhood to not only walk around but enjoy some of the good food and people so you can see for yourself instead of basing your views on stereotypes, your perceptions as you drive by on the highway, and what you hear and see on the news. Since you rarely if ever visit Mott Haven, I can tell you that white people wandering around is not as uncommon as you believe...as there are now plenty of "scouts" (as I like to call them) checking things out and reporting back to the troops. And no...they are not getting beat down...and if they were...it would be ALL over the news...to say the least....when was the last time you heard of a white person being attacked and beaten in Mott Haven again...I sure can't remember...I can however remember all the times a black person was beaten down in a white neighborhood....but somehow that fact goes ignored.

NooYorker..agreed...now that his statements are challenged he backs down and calls them sarcasm...its typical. Mead has lost credibility with me...he is just about the usual sterotypes and fear mongering.

Wandering. As in walking around without any clear motive. Pacing up and down the street without going into any of the businesses. Walking into residential neighborhoods, rifling thru the trash in order to pull out cans in order to get the deposit. I see this type of stuff happen all the time in my area, and nothing happens.

Now don't get me wrong. You go into many non-White NYC neighborhoods as a White guy, you will probably get jokes cracked on you, or someone will say something rude to you. But attacked just for being White? No.
