Default Drugs still a problem in Fordham-Bedford

Drug Trade on Parade in North Fordham Building

The rampant, blatant drug sales in North Fordham were due for another close-up.

Every year or two, tabloid columnists and network news cameras touch down to cover the latest outrageous example of the unrelenting drug trade in the area. This time it was drug sales inside Our Lady of Refuge Church that set off the frenzy, with clever headlines like "High Mass" emblazoned across the cover of the Daily News.

This over-the-top incident corresponded with a string of robberies of Mexican immigrants on 196th Street. The men, usually restaurant workers with a day's pay in cash on them, are attacked as they exit the Kingsbridge Road D station late at night.

But if crime is news, then there is news in North Fordham - or Sector George as police call it - every day and every night, even if network news cameras aren't there to record it.

This is a very sad story about a church/area that I am familiar with, my cousins all 6 were altar boys there and my aunt used to help out in the kitchen and volunteer there back in the 50's/60's. Although out of the Bronx many years it breaks my heart to read these stories, because I remember "back when". Seems that drugs are rampant in the area, and unless the powers that be, get it under control or eliminated, the people haven't a chance in hell. Why isn't the local precinct doing a swipe of the area and arresting the drug dealers? Why isn't the pastor or monsigor taking action to curtail drug activity in their church?

This leaves my heart heavy that this is still a problem, my wish is that they (whoever that may be) will get their act together and make the area a safe and welcome environment for people to live.

I never say it was a nice area. I just didn't see the drug activity in the open. What, they are so dumb to do it infront of other people? They are on the corners but what they do, they do it among their own. If you are not part of them, then you stay out of that group of people. Sorry if I did not catch them. But parts of it looks sort of nice (during the day), even with the drug activity. LOL. I have a way of seeing things.

Anyway, seems like these things are happening inside some buildings lobbies.

The 52nd precinct was very busy in September and early October according to an article I read. But remember now that the 52nd precinct consists of ALOT heavy drug blocks, 183rd, 194th and 196th are notorious for them. It takes alot of work to clean these areas, but with due time "maybe" it will improve.

Lets hope so.

cyrus--I can relate that some blocks look OK despite the dealers. I know what you mean. It's tough to describe but it's there

Mario--is 196th street bad on the other side of the Concourse too (ie Morris, Creston) or is it just limited to briggs,,etc

As far as I know the other side of the concourse neighborhoods on 196th are sketchy. But in terms of drugs, east of the concourse are the heaviest.

The rule of thumb is that the neighborhoods west of the Concourse are heavier with gangs, while on the east is more drug heavy.

I was reading the article that talks about dealers on Bainbridge and 198th. That's right at the MSU campus. The blight is spreading upward it seems
