I did this for a few years. Each paycheck has both state's taxes taken out of it, which sucks, but then come tax time, your NY taxes get credited for the amount you paid to Jersey and you wind up getting a pretty big return.
If its just yourself, you should consider moving to NJ. Otherwise you will be paying NYC income tax while earning NJ level salary. Earning NYC level salary and living within NYC is one story...earning NJ level which are typically lower and live in NYC...is not a savvy financial move.
