They need to continue the tunnel and link the 7 line to Secaucus in Jersey. If all of a sudden the millions of people in NJ had a quick $2.50 on & off ride into Manhattan the economic benefits to NYC would be off the charts
After the Hudson Yards projects are complete with office buildings, residential space, commercial space, etc that area will one day become a very busy station. However, all the construction has to finish in that area which is a few years away.
I'm still not buying that it would be so much busier than the existing stations in the middle of Manhattan, thoiugh.

Why settle for a few block extension to Parsons & Northern? It should really go all the way out to Bayside or College Point.

An eastward extension almost happened. But like many unbuilt projects, the money was there. Bickering and peoples distaste for Elevated lines killed it. And we are currently experiencing the consequences. The ultimate terminus would have been Little Neck Boulevard in Bayside.
Did you know that the original plans called for an Elevated section where the Main Street station is now?

WWII killed it. Not bickering and distate for elevated lines.

Joe Lhota killed all talk of that when Bloomberg was still the mayor. Unless NJ is going to assist NY with capital budget and the operational expenses of a 7 line extension (split all expenses at least 50/50) there really is no point, particularly when it's hard to extend existing lines or build new subway lines in NYC for NY residents.
Come to think of it, this benefits NJ residents far more than NY residents, so NJ would need to pay for the majority of this.

The benefits would be mostly for NYC with people coming to spend. But there would be some reverse traffic for curious NY'ers visiting NJ for the first time although not as much
I believe around 2015 or 2016, MTA will also be replacing the 7 trains with the 4/5/6 trains..
The new models are already on the 7 line. Eventually all the remaining old stock will be gone
I really miss the redbirds though, you can still visit one next to Queens Borough Hall
