Can someone please tell me what is wrong with this neighborhood?

Crime rate 2014 (so far)

81st : 972 crimes per 100,000
25th: 875 crimes per 100,000
73rd: 813 crimes per 100,000
75th: 798 crimes per 100,000
48th: 733 crimes per 100,000
77th: 715 crimes per 100,000
28th: 712 crimes per 100,000

Year in and year out it's crime rate is astronomical. I thought Bed-Stuy was gentrified?

For that matter you have two harlem neighborhoods up there. Including the one that has seen the most gentrification.

81st precinct is east bed stuy I'm guessing right? Wouldn't consider that a gentrified area. Gentrification rape ends at Stuyvesant ave.

But describe it. Not many housing projects. So what is it mostly tenements? What makes it so high crime?

Honestly, I think it's simply the fact that that part of Bed Stuy has not seen the type of development the west side has. Therefore, as that precinct improves, it highlights how the east side has not experienced the same level of improvement. Before gentrification, it was the 79th pct that was more dangerous than anything. Plus, keep in mind that the population for the 81st pct is lower than 73rd or 75th.

For you, my uptown friend, the atmosphere is no different than 7th or 8th Avenue between the 140s and 150s. So it's pretty much like that. More brownstones, but pretty much the same crap.

And the biggest housing projects within the confines of the 81st (RV and Brevoort) are pretty much as bad as Brooklyn gets excluding Brownsville and ENY.

Only the small southwest corner of the 81st is gentrified. North Halsey Street, East Stuyvesant Avenue, South Fulton Street, West Marcus Garvey (formerly Sumner Avenue) Boulevard. The rest of the 81st - you gotta duck.

I would say it's mostly tenements, and small brownstones. The only housing project I know is breevort where fabolous is from and those projects are very bad. There's also another housing complex on Fulton and Malcolm x across boys and girls high school, same story.

For the most part it's tenements. Looks similar to bushwick.

Ahh the infamous Smurf Village. I did some running around there back in my 20s.

I wouldn't say the 81st looks similar to Bushwick though - Bushwick doesnt have as many brownstones, more old aluminum siding tenements.

And you forgot about RV - Roosevelt Houses which I mentioned before. But that part of the Stuy - from Marcus Garvey to Patchen I know like the back of my hand. That's the hood.

I didn't mention Roosevelt because I thought they were part of 79th. As far as similarities. To me both ocean and bushwick pretty much have those walk up buildings and small 2 story brownstones. I guess a big difference to me is that a lot of the houses in bushwick aren't as much made from brick as ocean hill-bed stuy.
