I would suggest either E Harlem where I live (Im young and female as well and live by myself) or the W side above the 100th. Everything is footsteps away and you have an easy commute to Midtown/Downtown. Better than from Hoboken. Also rent is affordable.

Hoboken is a great little city with a great view of Manhattan but personally Id rather be in one of the five boroughs, close to a subway that can take me anywhere I want. Dont want to have to come into Manhattan on the Path or a ferry every day!

It depends on your budget. It you're ain't making the $$$, don't force yourself to like in Manhattan or parts of the city that is expensive. You will be miserable. Don't rule out parts of the Bronx or Jersey.

$550 - 600??? Ummm...Poughkeepsie maybe? It's only an hour forty-five from grand central and you could probably find a share there for that amount.

Seriously though, about $1000/mo will be needed to split a two bedroom in any desireable part of Brooklyn where other twenty-somethings gather. And even that may be pushing it. In most of the neighborhoods that have been suggested to you thus far one bedrooms are going for $1600 and up and two bedrooms for $1800 (if you're very lucky) to well over $2000. These are the "fun" neighborhoods. If you want a nice, stable, perfectly safe neighborhood without the twenty-something factor there are a number of places you could look for about $800/mo.

Seriously people, NY is expensive. I have to wonder how many people even look into moving here for more than a few minutes before they post. Some very basic guidelines:

Get a neighborhood map, a subway map, and open the craigslist rental page. Cross reference those for 10 minutes and you will quickly get an idea of how much things really cost. See where the neighborhoods are that look convenient, check their subway stops, look up neighborhood on craigslist. THEN come here with an idea of how much it costs to live and we can definitly give you suggestions on places.

Listen, everyone knows somebody who "has this GREAT deal on a place in so-and-so" but the fact is that they are hard to find, especially for someone just moving into the city. When you find a rental listing that is grossly out of line with the others in the neighborhood there is something wrong with it. That "thing", most likely, is that it is NOT actually in the neighborhood the broker says it is.

Moral of the story: Do some research about moving. It is a major life decision and it would serve you well to be informed. And, yes, use this board as a source but come in with a well researched question.

This thread is 2 months old. Yes, people do read old threads when they are doing research so it's not necessarily a waste of time to reply to them a few months after the fact. But I have to wonder why KRaZY feels it necessary to revive even 2-month-old threads to talk about how great East Harlem is??

I haven't spent much time in East Harlem but do know that it has a bad reputation in terms of safety. So is the motivation to talk about how great East Harlem is and how safe it is for a young single woman ON EVERY THREAD coming from a desire to single-handedly change the public's perception of this neighborhood?? What's the problem? Your friends won't visit you there?

I really don't mind people posting repetitively about the neighborhood they live in - because, after all, that's what we have the most 'expertise' in- however, I just have to wonder about someone who goes to great lengths such as dredging up old threads - in an effort to tout her neighborhood in a very biased way. Other people manage to give a balanced view of the neighborhood they live in as even very nice neighborhoods have both pros and cons.

Thanks for pointing that out Henna. I need to start reading the dates on these posts before I start spending time writing a reply. I assume it's at the top so must be new. Krazy, why bump an old thread for one of these specific questions about one person's circumstances just to plug East Harlem? If you want to bump something why not bump a more general discussion where you can add something?

I live in Poughkeepsie (and would be moving shortly to NYC) and there is no place in Poughkeepsie where you can get a $550-600! Unless its in the bad part of town... even there, I don't think you can find it for that cheap!

Hi, Henna. You know about the Ignore feature? Go to My Settings (under the banner atop page), and you'll find it under Miscellaneous. You -- anyone -- can enter the name of any poster who annoys you and *POOF* Gone!

If only real life were that easy.
