Whaddya mean "home" country. Isn't this your home? Man up old chap and cut the apron strings.
Again, had you walked into any bar in say Astoria, you would have seen plenty of Americans rooting for Greece, Colombia, Ecuador, or whatever country their ethnic background is from (as in immediate, not "my family came here from England 200 years ago") it's not like this is even shocking that this happens in a place like NYC where even citizens hold on to a strong cultural heritage. You can't possibly be that naive that this happens. Here's even a comedic take on the whole thing. Triumph Returns To 'Conan' To Make Fun Of The World Cup - Digg

Did I say it didn't happen? Try re-reading my post before rushing to refute.

Now if its cricket or rugby - well the US basically hasn't got a team, so....

Aside from that, "strong cultural heritage" is a load of flannel; while what we are discussing here is essentially harmless, that mantra is a thoughtless excuse for many mindless behaviors, from FGM, honor killings, spitting in public, mistreatment of women, mistreatment of homosexuals, biting on the pitch etc. It doesn't get a pass, so to speak. Strong cultural heritage = codswallop. Is what one is doing decent or well-considered? That's the test.
Supporting a team against your adopted country - my cultural heritage says that's very bad manners ;-)

I root for the US but quite honestly it has a long way to go before it can be competitive with even second tier countries.

I have no use for nationalism and watch each game for what it has to offer.

The world has had far too much
"My country Uber Alles."
or worse "My GOD Uber Alles."

Less of both these emotions and we'd be living in a better, more peaceful world.

So, may the best team win.

They are already competitive with second tier countries. If you are able to show that you can get out of the group stage consistently then you are competitive with second tier countries.

Not really. US would still have a hard time against Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary and maybe some of the Baltic states, and definitely against the 1st tier countries that got eliminated like Spain and England. I am talking about soccer in general and not just the WC. They were outplayed by Ghana in the game they won. I would want a US team that I can really feel good about as a powerhouse and not just one that took advantage of the elimination process.

Did they take advantage of it? Or is that how the cards fell...

I don't think it's how the cards fell either. They earned some of the chances they got like Dempsey's 1st goal vs. Ghana. But it would have been better for US soccer if they played well the whole game, and most of their other games consistently.

They play how they play lol. This is not really an American sport, and our top athletes are not rushing to the soccer field. I don't think they're actively trying to manipulate their way to the finals or anything. They're just getting lucky.

That said, I would love if the US somehow won one day in my lifetime. Hopefully soon. Would **** off the world so much being that we don't generally give two F's about the game here. Would give me great pleasure.
