I guess water is dangerous. Looks like almost everything near water is red.

Anyway, I have my own visual safety rating, based on two factors: derelict looking buildings/signs, and people hanging around looking hostile. Whoever is rating these appear to find industrial buildings to be dangerous regardless of whether they are derelict-looking. Also they are afraid of dumpsters. They did rate the GWB to be dangerous, so that's about right.

It's by perception, most people find industrial areas ugly so they're all in red. Hunt's Point is much worse than the rest of the South Bronx. The greenpoint / williamsubrg warehouse area is definitely desolate at night, is it that dangerous? Some ugly arterials and highways get red, too. Queens Blvd is red, though it's dangerous in a non-crime sense.
