Default Moving to Park Place, near Sterling Place, is that area ok?

I am thinking about moving to Park Place, near Sterling Place.

I went to see the apartment and I liked it but I have always heard bad things about Crown Heights. I would be taking the 4 train from Utica. The blocks to the subway are filled with stores and people. It is the side streets that I am concerned about.

My boyfriend is White and I am concerned about him walking around at night. By the way I am African American (West Indian)

Does anyone live in this area? Can I get some pros and cons?

I want to add that my choices are limited because of my credit and what I am willing to spend. I am about to be evicted because I can no longer afford my current rent.

Thanks

Park Place and Sterling run parallel to each other, from Prospect Park to around Ralph Avenue in Crown Heights (that part of the Heights is known as Weeksville), a 4-mile stretch!

north of eastern parkway is the worse side of crown heights, south of eastern parkway is safer, but not by much.
with that being said i hang out on utica avenue and sterling place all the time. its the ghetto and there's drug activity and 1 time i did hear gunshots a block away on rochester avenue. however i'm used to the area so i never feel unsafe over there. but there is a crime presence over there that is alive and well. i'm not sure if robbery is a big issue over there but i assume it happens sometimes. i know for a fact though that drug activity is big. there are also gangs in the area but im not sure how much they will have an impact on you, as they're mostly made up of teens and people in their early 20s.
the whole block of sterling place between utica and rochester is NYCHA rehabs. so its a low income neighborhood on top of that and with it comes the issues that low income neighborhoods have.
to really get a feel for the area i suggest you walk around there at about 7 PM to get a feel for the area. what may be good for the goose may not be good for the gander. like i said i hang out there all the time and i never felt unsafe but it may be a different feeling for you and your boyfriend. report back and let us know how you felt in the area.
p.s.: if you're not used to the hood and you end up living over here, learn to get adjusted real quick.

Well I went to see the apartment at 7p and the streets were crowded and I was fine with it. More annoyed at the crowds. I see it as that I will spend more time at work and inside my apartment. But there will be days when I need to go outside. It isn't the kind of neighborhood where I will be hanging out on the street, but if I need to run to the store I don't want to feel unsafe, nor do I want people who visit me to feel unsafe.

Thank you everyone for your quick replies.

I've been to crown heights to visit a friend a few times and each time there have been regular joe white folk walking around. This was by the #2 sterling stop. Not a whole lot of them, but a few. My friend is Hispanic but he is White, and dresses like a hipster. For what it's worth he doesn't like the neighborhood that much. It seems okay to me.

Well I am looking to stay a year, clean up my credit and move some place else.

I will be moving from Sunnyside, Queens and it is a difference, but I knew it would be.

Yeah I know. That's why I specified the #2 stop. I was just giving input on Crown Heights. The little I know about it.
