This is going to impact many businesses in the NY/NJ/CT area in addition to commuters, unfortunate that the can't agree on a reasonable solution.

Quote:

MINEOLA, N.Y. — Unions negotiating with the Metropolitan Transportation
Authority say talks aimed at avoiding a walkout at the nation's largest
commuter railroad have collapsed.

Anthony Simon, the workers' chief negotiator, says Monday afternoon that the
8 Long Island Rail Road unions are now proceeding with strike plans.

MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast planned to comment on the talks later
Monday at MTA headquarters in Manhattan.

The unions representing 5,400 workers have said they intend to strike unless
an agreement is reached by July 20. Simon says it appears a strike is
likely.

A strike could affect 300,000 daily riders, most of whom travel in and out of
New York City from Long Island.

Glad my job is a 10 min subway ride away. I know a guy that commutes 3 hours, EACH WAY! That is nuts.

MTA can mobilize school buses to easily defeat this strike.

BTW, what LIRR is asking for? A raise?

17% raise which is a few years of all retroactive.

Current total average salary of LIRR MTA= 87k a year.

If my math is right, 17% raise should bring them above 100k....average.

MTA is the new MBA.

The implications are national, there is considerable interest from outside interests not to "give up" future hires. They want to continue with limited payment to pensions and nothing into health care. Every win by the unions is a victory for the status quo and acceptance of a failed system. The disagreement is about the future and other unions nationally will uses this for leverage.

Not just LI...
