This is not true as some Jews for instance have lots of children.

I agree, however a person should not be having 5 or 6 kids while working at Target, for example.

But there is an exception for policies that are demonstrably related to the requirements of the job in question. The SHSAT would definitely qualify as being demonstrably related to choosing students who can excel.

Good logic applied here(regarding your final two sentences), the only thing is the SHSAT is being used by a tax payer funded entity, which is why the NAACP suit is still in discussion.

Because it led the state senators, who have to power to change the law about the qualifications for the specialized high schools, to question the validity of the SHSAT and to believe that multiple measures will ensure more blacks and Hispanics will be admitted. Of course there is no way to know this. Schools with multiple measures (i.e., Townsend Harris HS) don't have many black and Hispanic students either.

Notoriety, IMHO.

And, to clarify, it is the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, not the NAACP.

This is the complaint.

Don't think it will hurt them in the long run. The so called tiger moms will adapt and figure it out. They just need to "train" their kids to be more well rounded now to get into these schools. They will still have a big academic advantage over most kids.

Mostly the ultra orthodox, but they don't really live in mainstream society.

Everyone should be taking college prep courses, IMO. If you choose not to go to college, that's fine, but to have a subpar foundation based on just the remedials is a recipe for disaster. Back in the day, there were Regents and Non-Regents classes. IMO there should be ONLY Regents level classes. Forget quotas, how about improving the current schools? Stop dumbing down and increase rigorous courses.

My brother, Latino, attends a magnet high school in Florida that is 90% Black and Latino and the test scores are off the charts. So yeah, neither group is a lost cause. Also, FYI Bugsy, not all Blacks and Latinos live in the hood..my brother has never seen a hood in his life and is being raised in 3000+ sq ft house on the water.

By and large those "some Jews" are members of various orthodox/Hasidic sects. Yes, will give you that they are "white" but many are hardly "upper class" though some are well enough off. You will find a good number however are barely middle or working class to poor. This is in large part to their tendency towards having large to very large families without adequate resources.

The Hasidic communities at large are *VERY* good at extracting state, local and federal welfare benefits which again many are able to claim because of large numbers of children. The Satmar village of Kiryas Joel holds the distinction of being the poorest area of the United States. This is largely due to large family sizes (children) in relation to household income. As a result more households there than any place else in the USA receive federal and NYS *welfare* benefits. The Hasidic population of said village is also *VERY* good at getting federal and NYS tax dollars to fund everything from hospitals to separate special education programs for their children.

They're not planning to dumb down -- just increase the qualifications to the kid having a resume of sorts. I agree with you that the current schools need to improve. If kids are admitted under these new requirements and they don't have the preparation because they're going to subpar schools that don't teach the courses required to do 9th grade work at a specialized high school, you're just playing a numbers game to get kids in. I want kids to graduate.

I also think there are not enough general liberal arts & sciences / college prep high school programs today. Now, every school has a theme. Give the kids the core foundation to be prepared for college and some electives. Why do they have to decide at 12-13 years old what career they're interested in?
