Can anyone recommend any weekend activities that would be good for a mid-twenties professional out-of-towner to meet similarly aged people in NYC? I'm thinking things like wood-working, cooking, electronic repair classes, restaurant-hopping groups, etc. Any suggestions?

Wine tasting, art stuff with wine and cheese. oh yeah check out Tinder and your iphone or meetup.com . These places are full of non native career driven highly educated transient types who live in NYC online or off. I have been to these scenes before and shocked that I'm the only native New Yorker!

You have to go to the library or some community center for bulletin or get Timeout New York Mag.
Try signing up for New York Cares. Once you're in the system, there are lots of volunteer opportunities all over the city, in all the boros. Lots of young people (people of all ages, really) participate, and the activities vary from planting and weeding in parks, to helping elementary school kids with math, to helping immigrants with English skills. A good way to meet people, and do some good in the city at the same time.
