Default Bronx Community College

I will be attending college again for the Spring semester and Bronx Community College is an option I have. It is in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx at 181st St/ University Ave. I get off the 4 train at Burnside Ave.

I heard the architecture of the campus is amazing but the student body has trouble dealing with the "element" (robberies, assaults, gang violence). Is BCC a viable option or should it be a last resort?

More likely a last resort. I used to live on Andrews Ave which is a couple blocks down. Back in the day my moms used to go there and she'd take me with her cause I was still a youngin. But on the other hand, if you have some common street sense, I think you'll be alright. Last time I went down there was like 5 years ago tho so maybe things got worse.

Either way, they do provide a good education. And yeah, the architecture is pretty sweet.

try and pick daytime classes. mind your own business and you should be fine.
burnside up to U heights/mlk is very busy so you shuold be fine to and from the train even till the early pms. the area changes at night time though so day classes are best
but it doesn't mean you'll die if u take night classes and teh campus is beautiful and the staff is very helpful

I know the area very well. I live a block from there. It is predominatly Dominican. You have University Heights high school in the campus. It's a very bad HS, and that may be of concern. Hall of fame terrace is ok. But if you have a car don't park there because they WILL steal it. On the next block in Andrews ave you have PS 291 and PS 15. Gets really crowded with kids in the afternoon. Walk a block down and you're on 183rd. High drug activity and strong gang presence all the way from 183rd to Fordham rd. Also avoid walking down 181st, a grocery store was robbed and the owner killed last week on 181st and Davidson. There is an area around the school that's pretty decent. But really it's the only "quiet" spot. University ave is a commercial strip south of BCC and more residential north. I guess you're safe during the day but dont wander too late.

It's not a warzone. But there is a threat of crime. Be aware of your sorroundings and take precautions. You will be fine .

Yeah I have a friend who goes there for classes. She told me its not that bad, however you will definitely stick out as a white or asian person going to class there as there aren't many. All that being said its still a pretty decent school. If you have no other choices then its fine.

However in my opinion there are better City colleges out there. Hunter, Baruch, and Queens college are all pretty good schools. I'd check those out before I did Bronx Community.

Lol I wish my grades were good enough for those schools. Right now, community college is my only options

I used to go to BCC in the mid 90's. I'm a light skinned hispanic. I was never bothered on campus or in the surronding areas. I do know alot of whites and asians attend BCC and never get harrased. I'm sure you will be ok.

I've been there in the middle of the day to go sightseeing. To see the Hall of Fame, Gould Memorial Library, the various old buildings of the former NYU Heights Campus, and it never seemed to be too bad. The kids who go to school there seem friendly enough (for the Bronx) and I've even walked the perimeter of the campus, so it didn't seem too bad at all.

But who knows? Maybe I lucked out or something...
