There are good area and crappy areas just like anywhere else. Who told you East New York and Brownsville weren't ghetto? They are and always have been. That's not news.
it's incredible how brokers will lead naive out of towner kids to live in these neighborhoods.
And it is even more incredible how some people are unable to distinguish between incidents and trends. An individual incident proves nothing about the relative safety of Brooklyn.
The crime rate in NYC is below the national average, and the crime rate in Brooklyn is at the NYC average (so is below the national average). Obviously a borough of nearly 3 million people will generate lots of crime stories, but Brooklyn is generally a safe place to live.
Feel free to post lurid headlines and say "Aha!", all you are exposing is your lack of understanding of data.
And people aren't moving to Brooklyn because they are "naive" or because of "brokers". They're moving there because they want an urban and creative environment and Brooklyn is about as good as it gets. They aren't moving into housing projects in Brownsville anyways, so I have no idea what this thread is even about.

CD is full of suffering haters who are mad that they cannot afford the areas they like to bash.
The majority of bashers are in the suburbs or comparatively uncool and undeveloped parts of the city, Glendale. Western and Central Brooklyn and Western Queens (LIC, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, and Jackson Heights) have come along way and continue to rapidly develop.

Part of it is understandable, takes a dedicated and passionate person to live in substandard conditions for the sake of being in NYC. To watch as government and real estate developers conspire together to sell the area to whoever has the most money, without any consideration for the rest of the people who live there is unfair. Unfortunately, there is no good solution in creating a fair system in which everyone can coexist.
In addition, creating a system in which artificially drives up cost of living for the intention of removing the natives is a form of discrimination. I suppose it better than the past in which people would be forcefully removed through physical harm towards them.

Glendale is the last cool nabe left in NYC. Ridgewood is still cool as well, but only has a few years left. Hopefully the newcomers are aware of the things that make these last of the old school NYC nabes so special, but they'll probably look to replace the butchers and bakeries with grass-fed and vegan crap.

If that was the case then wouldn't these posters bash areas such as the UES, Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Heights, Astoria, Greenpoint etc.
At the end of the day people will live where they can AFFORD to LIVE!
True. A buddy of mine just got priced out of my neighborhood, but was able to find something within budget in BedStuy. Sucks that you need to move to the hood to find decently priced rent.

Well, he did what he had to do. Better than being homeless..........

Old school NYC neighborhoods suck! I love the new NYC and the new Queens (LIC, Astoria are awesome, and I'm loving the changes in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst.) Cooler people moved in NYC neighborhoods.
