I noticed there are more and more Muslims on the streets of the city than ever before, especially women who wear Islamic clothing. What's going on? Tourists? Muslims no longer afraid or ashamed covering up?

Depends on the neighborhood I guess. I see a lot of that in City Line and Ozone Park.
Muslims have always had a large population here. Perhaps you simply failed to nticed.
I must take issue with the above statement. My memory of New York City goes back to the mid fifties. I do not remember seeing any females dressed in Chadors or burqas. I do recall seeing Hasidic Jews walking the streets, though.
It wasn't until the full implementation of the Immigration Reform Act of 1965 and the Refugee Act of 1980 and later legislation that the Muslim population and population of non-Europeans in general shot up.
If you want to get a real taste of what NYC was like in late 40s and 50s, I recommend watching the 1947 movie, "The Naked City." The film was shot entirely on location on the streets and in the buildings of Manhattan. You can watch the whole movie for free on YouTube.
