I will be moving my family (of 6) to the NYC area in a few months. We are looking for neighborhoods/towns that a) have good public schools b) are affordable (homes/apartments in the $300K to $400K range and c) are an easy commute to Grand Central. . . I know it's a tall order, but any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
The trains that go into Grand Central come in from Westchester County to the north of the city and Connecticut, to the northeast, so that is where I'd begin my search. With four kids I would hesitate to recommend moving to NYC proper because of the complexity of navigating the school system at different levels and the difficulty of finding good schools in general.
I'd suggest posting in some of the suburban NY forums, where people are more knowlegable about the 'burbs

That, and in most areas of Westchester, a $300-$400k house is more in the area of "starter home" rather than anything that will comfortable for six people.

Yes, I agree. $300-$400K is a starter home at best. Realistically, to get something decent you are looking at twice that and then nowhere near Manhattan.

Give me a break, 6 people live in 2 bedroom apartments.

Yes, your right. They also live in vans down by the river. And under bridges. And in boxes in dark alleys.
