Hi everyone! My roommate and I are moving to NYC and are looking at a place on Atlantic Avenue between Smith & Hoyt. I walked around the area during the day but wasn't able to check it out at night (my roommate said it was fine, but I'm a girl and he's a guy, so I wanted to double check the area was OK). I'm a petite 27-year-old woman (Asian).
I'm not from NYC, and I get pretty nervous in city environments. I never walk with my phone out/headphones in. Will I be safe walking from the F train at Bergen Street or the A/C at Hoyt Street or the 2/3 or 4/5/6 at Borough Hall? Is it safe to walk through downtown Brooklyn at night? How late? Or, is the walk from Bergen Street going to be safer? The forums here say Boerum Hill is very safe, but I worry because I read all these reports about people getting mugged or what not during the day. Is that common?
Thanks for any help. I'm really excited to move to NYC but want to err way on the side of safety!
IMO you should be fine. We had to stay on Duffield a few blocks away during Sandy for 2 weeks. I never had any safety issues even at night while walking the dog by myself. Frequently headed over towards Court St. for food / go out (therefore walking along where you are looking to live) and was fine. That was 2 years ago when D'town Brooklyn was not nearly as developed - it has since gotten much more so.
I've been using the garage on Schermerhorn & Hoyt for over a year, and even when returning the car on the later side on my own have never had an issue. That area is slightly quieter / more desolate than where you are proposing too.
Boerum Hill is a made up name for what is either Downtown Brooklyn or Gowanus. Either way is should be safe. You have some PJs on Wyckoff st., but for the most part non-threatening. Do to its proximity to the courthouses, government support systems, and transportation hubs, you have many people wandering around with nothing better to do. So sometimes to fill their days and needs, they mug people.
