Default Moving to a Mansion in Tremont

Interesting article about a couple buying a mansion in Tremont after being priced out of owning a Harlem brownstone. If I remember correctly, the mansion is about 3,300 square feet, cost $675,000 and requires at least $200,000 in repairs. What do people think, are they crazy or visionary?

yeah that what my wife said when she saw this article. They will probable have to knock some of those rooms down and combine. Maybe 4/5 rooms when its all said and done? Still not bad and a nice yard to boot.

They're nuts out their mind. I have read on another site that 2 men were shot and killed on 182nd and Crotona ave this evening. If you go back a week and a half ago, there was another man shot on 181st and Crotona ave. Go back last month and a fued between the bloods and crips resulted in a man being shot on 180th and Hughes (which I witness btw). That's 4 victims, each a block from each other, in a span of 5 weeks.

This my friends is East Tremont. The most dangerous neighborhood in the Bronx, and arguably the city.

Unfortunately I have the misfortune of going back there tomorrow

So what exactly is so new york times news worthy ---- that a couple bought a house? or that a non-bronx couple bought a house in the bronx. will this be in the times if they bought a house in say .............. bensonhurst????

and super mario - are you sure it was crips and bloods or it was just two fighting groups?

and I see your campaign for E-Tremont to be the worst NH in the city continues... either way a death is a death and it's still no bad
. someone's family is sad right now....

bx718,

When I was at 180th and Hughes to pick somebody up, in the front stoop there were guys with blue bandanas. I leave the area and go somewhere else but when I get back I see 3 police cars, and the yellow tape closing off the street. They direct us around and as I turn the corner I hear two people overtalking saying "Na these Slobs (Bloods) ni***s is wilin".......so them being mortal enermies I assume it was gang related. So I didn't actually witness it but was there just before and just after it happened.

Another reason was that 2 weeks later as I go in the door at the same location, I see like 10 crip members tagging up the inside.

Much of my disdain for east Tremont comes from personal expirience. The stats also back it up. I mean I live in University Heights, so im accostumed to the ghetto....but over there is something else.

I hope the shootings in and around Crotona ave and the 180's is just a blip....that the block is "hot". If it continues this way, I can't even think of how bad it will get.

I guess it's newsworthy for the fact that an upper-middle class family would even consider living in Tremont. I don't really know the area, but the zoo is a great amenity for kids, and public transportation is good -- a metro north stop / express stop on the D. But it does have a really bad reputation.

Something forgotten in all of this....the couple is African-American. I've said this all along, that people talking gentrification have never considered that there is a Black gentry! (or should I say, don't want to consider it!).

Now, of course, there are tradeoffs in this endeavor; the rough East Tremont, plus the money it would take to repair this spot. Now, if I were them (and I'm not, or don't have near their money!), I would look at some type of tax relief/abatement from the city (I believe there is!)
