times square area
hi everyone. what do you think about a student new to the city, living in the times square area? i know it is a very commercialized area but we came across a pretty decent studio in the area. it's $1800. too much?
thanks

Yuck! Where do you plan to do your marketing? Where are you going to get your shoes repaired? Not my cup of tea. But if it's yours, go right ahead.

not sure what this means, but perhaps i should elaborate. my 22 yo kid will be working in the city for less than 6 months. i wouldn't be interested in living there, but i'm not 22 yrs. old.
i don't know the area which is why i posted for comments/help.

where is it located? late at night after the theater crowds leave, eighth avenue could be a problem. although it has been sanitized the past 11 years or so, i have noticed an increase in pimping and prostitution lately(I was approached going to a show twice the same night on 8th and 46th), vagrants, addicts, drunks and other similar types on 8th avenue. historically there has been a lot of concern over safety on that avenue though it is certainly better than in years past
if you're going to live on one of the theater district sidestreets east of 8th Avenue you should be OK but you have to be careful of 8th in the 40's at night

I see from your earlier posts that the student is your daughter. As a mother, I'd be uncomfortable with my new-to-the-city young adult daughter living around Times Square. For that same $1,800 you should be able to find something comparable, but in a nicer area.
Can you be a bit more specific about the location of the studio you've found?
Best of luck!

the area also has it's pockets of good and bad. if you're talking like 44th between 8th and 9th at night, it's not safe but 5 blocks up it's good
if you're talking 45th street off 7th/Bway it's good
if you mean 40th between 8th and 9th, NO GOOD!!

we haven't signed a lease yet, however, finding a sublet for less than 6 months has proved to be more difficult than anticipated...unless you want to live in a basement that looks and feels like a basement on the uws.
will i be able to sleep at night if she is at that address? this has really been stressful.

that's where the movie "Fame" was made in 1980! at The high school of performing arts. Where the kids danced on the car. That's the street.
Back in 1980 that street was an "iffy' Times Square sidestreet(cheap hotels, desolate after the theater) but now it has chain hotels, restaurants (I think it's Little Brazil street) and bars. I think there may be a church there too. Around the corner on 7th you have the Virgin Megastore which is open late and on 6th it's nothing but a canyon of office skyscrapers
I think it's a decent street, just a bit bland. Certainly better than west of 8th Avenue. if you can deal with the fact that anywhere is less safe after theater hours, you'll be OK. Just use reasonable caution after hours and she should be OK

that street is more like a mid way step between Times Square and the Radio city/Rockefeller Center area. It's good
