I am a young professional 28 year old guy and I am moving to NYC from San Antonio,TX and I am looking to find a nice studio or 1 bedroom apartment in NYC but not in Manhattan. I am thinking about a nice safe area close to public transit, stores, shops,pubs etc and close to the Financial District of Manhattan because that's the area I will be working at. I do have my own car and I make an annual salary of $61,500 a year. I am thinking about finding nice a place in Queens. Is Queens a nice area to live? I just want to avoid Manhattan at all costs. I will be using my car only on the weekends ( I don't want to get rid of my beautiful car LOL) and taking public transit to my job in Manhattan. I just want to know what area of the boroughs of NYC are nice. By the way in San Antonio I was paying for a 2 bedroom apartment for $950.00 a month in a upscale side of SA but I know NYC is impossible to rent a 2 bedroom apt for that price so I am looking at a studio or 1 bedroom apartment. Thanks.
Rethink the car thing. It may prove more expensive and more of a headache than you anticipate. If you have to garage it you're looking for probably a minimum of $250 a month anywhere in the five boroughs. If not, you're looking at constantly moving the car (we have alternate side of the street parking in NYC to allow for the street sweepers to come through), high insurance rates, the dangers of your car being sideswiped or broken into, and the pure hassle of just finding a parking spot every day. I'd recommend leaving the car home, and applying the money you'd spend on your wheels to your rent, so that you can live in a nicer place than you might otherwise afford. If you're dying to drive somewhere, rent a car or a Zip car.
A car is best only if you're in the farthest reaches of Queens, Bronx or Brooklyn, Staten Island, or off in the burbs. Anyplace close to the city center in NY a car becomes a very expensive proposition.
If you're working in the Financial District maybe you should consider the St. George section of Staten Island. I suggest this because of affordability. You can get a decent 1 bedroom for 1000-1100 a month over there, and you might still be able to keep your car. Somebody with more knowledge of the neighborhood can chime in on how the parking situation is over there because I don't know how congested it is.

You should be able to find a 1 bedroom in Queens with very manageable car ownership and within 30 - 40 mins to the Financial District by subway at a cost of $1300 - $1500 per month in a safe neighborhood.

Maybe even less. I live in a 2 bedroom and we pay $1450 a month. Obviously, I live in a very safe neighborhood.
I would suggest either Glendale (in Southern Queens/M train) or Astoria (which is close to the East River but further north) as probably the shortest commutes from Queens to the Financial District. For a commute of approx. an hour to the Financial District, you could consider Rego Park & Forest Hills in Queens. I think Glendale is probably the best for someone with a car as there are some streets there that don't have alternate side parking rules.
