Default How early for the New Year's Ball drop?

I'm going to make an attempt to go to Times Square tomorrow night for the festivities.

Yes, yes, I know......crowds, cold, drunks, no bathroom, pushing, shoving, tourists, standing for hours....I've heard it all, but I'm going regardless.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea how early I'd have to get there to get a prime spot right in Times Square to watch the ball drop. I know it will be several hours in advance, but by "several", would that be eight or would that be two? Educated guesses are welcome, but I'd love to hear from someone who actually went one year.

If i remember correctly they start shutting the streets down between 5 & 6 PM. Everyone not in place in by then will have to go through security checkpoints. The last few years the crowds have swelled all the way up to 57 St because of the mild weather. I would suggest be there by 6.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going but I guess I need to make a decision within the next half hour or so. I'm just a little under the weather and not sure I'm up for the six hour wait in the cold.
