Bronx Crime to go down !!!!!!!!
I just saw this on news12 bx.
Bronx crime is expected to drop dramatically
Operation impact is a program where the NYPD delegates new academy graduates to high crime NHs in the city. This year, about two thirds of the new graduates are being assigned to the bronx alone. The cops will be spread in the following precinct areas:
44 - Highbridge
46 - Morris Heights
52 - Kingsbridge (surprise surprise).
The report said that, usually, NYPD delegates only a percentage of the new
graduates to Operation Impact. However, this year, NYPD is delegating ALL 2008 graduates to Impact as part of a huge effort to reduce crime.
It's interesting that Highbridge is on the list since it's the precinct area that houses the new yankee stadium redevelopment zone. Great seller for new residents and businesses. I guess the stick up kids will now have a lot more options
Does this mean the hand to hand guys on decatur, 194, valentine, bainbridge etc are going out of business? I guess we'll see what happens with time.

Its actually mixed news due to that fact that this years academy class is about 2/3 the size of the previous (about 900 this year vs 1200 last year).
Regardless foot patrols are the best way to reduce street crime.

but then doesn't it have a slingshot effect like - having all the the cops out on the street corners etc - will just make decrease the supply (in a way) for a while. Then as soon as the impact program is suspended, the crime/drugs level will jump to a level higher than it was prior to the program.
If it's not permanent does it really help? what happens to the dealers and the stick up kids? do they move their ops somewhere else?
A few years ago, people will remember how booming thebootleg market was on fordham rd. The cops installed cameras, raided the place CONSTANTLY and now, there are no bootleggers on fordham.
I wonder will happen if the same can be done for street crime in places like kingsbridge
Hey - Mead - i guess East Tremont is not so bad after all - it was not included in the impact program - or was it? i have to look at the precinct boundaries again.

+all the retirees. NYPD been loosing strength for years now. While the 44, 46, and 52nd precincts are getting a little bit of new man power the nearby precincts are ever loosing. If you include those who will leave the 44, 46, and 52nd this year the gains and loses will probably balance out if they are lucky.

Yes it will go back up and down and up and down at times. Impact is no more then a ticket blitz. It's effect on crime is temporary. Pushes the street level dealing indoors at times but doesn't solve the problem. Shakes up the area and gives the locals a hard time with a stampede of summons. Foot post make a difference but the man power in these precincts are already low and will not be at healthy levels even with the boost from impact. The bootleggers are still out there on Fordham Road. I pass plenty blankets full of bootleg CD's, 3 card monte scams, and obvious stolen merchandise all the time. Hit the place hard and a few days later they are back. Why? A lot of low income people live around Fordham Road and they want to eat. They might get locked up or summoned but they will come back because the next day they will still need a quick buck. East Tremont is bad too, it just didn't get impact. Plenty crap areas don't get impact, it's just pretty random who gets it. A huge money maker for the city no doubt about that.

I guess I spoke prematurely. There were two killings in the 183rd area. 1 fatal stabbing and a shooting. Over 15 shots were fired and a 3 yr old girl was hit by a bullet. An old lady watching t.v. also had a bullet through her t.v. as her new year's present.
183rd and walton , 183rd and tiebod. I guess 183rd is living up to it's "rep"
Also a shooting at west farms.
This is the type of stuff that has me defending the bronx when i'm with my friends. I guess operation impact is coming in just in time????

Operation Impact is a good thing because, in theory, it focuses manpower on areas in need..and those areas where they are putting the additional men are greatly in need. I have been seeing a stronger police presence all over my area ( Mott Haven) for the past month or so....and the presence has not let up. There is usually a reasonable police presence around here, however it has been noticeable increased as far as I can tell.
In order for the Bronx to continue to improve, crime must continue to be addressed, and the increased police presence must be played up in the media as well to justify (or support) the continued upswing/potential in the Bronx. In order for the Bronx to continue its transformation, more of these types of programs will spread..and the strong police presence is another way to pave the way for the transition.
Will the increased police presence really make a difference? At the end of the day, probbaly not, but it DOES send a signal to the community, the borough, and the city, that the Bronx will no longer tolerate the open and flagrant drug activity. So those that have the brains to become discreet, elminate the violence, and take it indoors (like much of the rest of city), will be the only ones in business....which will make the areas ALOT more liveable, safer, and mainstream...which is really the goal. Not to elminate the drug activity, that hasn't happened ANYWHERE in this city, but rather to make it at a level where its presence is on the backburner, so that communities can move forward and improve...as much of the rest of the city has.
This is further evidence as to the real and committed transformation of the Bronx as a working/middle class enclave..the only way to continue making inroads is with these types of programs and attention....the net effect of ALL these programs, investments, and growth will be very positive. I suspect this is the first of many upcoming waves of attention/initiatives by the city that will speed up the transformation over the next 2-3 years.
