Lol....agreed....which is why I also recommend visiting EVERY area before deciding..its all about comfort level. I just dont believe disregarding areas like Mott Haven outright based on sterotypes is fair either. And based on his confines especially...why not take a look?

Yes...but at the end of the stereotypes are BAD and are essentially pointless. We all know the obvious racial sterotypes...but the only way to get rid of them is to stop repeating them..especially when they no longer apply or are proven to be false.

My point is sometimes you have to pay more money to live in a nica area, find roomates or commute farther. Some places just aren't that nice to live in. Sure Mott Haven and Longwood have a few nice blocks, but thats it.
Not too mention your still pretty isolated from the nightlife of manhattan. Catching a subway home after midnight is a pain in the ass, and good luck getting a cab to take you to the bronx.
I'd rather share a bathroom or spend an extra 20 minutes commuting to get the extra amenities that are found in middle class neighborhoods.

I agree Jrock..I would much prefer getting a roommate and living in a better area. It's all about what you are willing to compromise on..some people just get tired of the roommate life and still want to be in the city...so at that point....other compromises must be made.

i am in the same situation... i just graduated and found a job in manhattan...
just yesterday i found a really nice studio in rockaway... a 40 minute commute, however i am paying 800, all utilities included, in a really nice area.
i have family friends there and they say there are certain points to avoid, but if you stay in the "cleaned up" areas it is both safe and you can enjoy a beach life as well.

There is no way that your commute in rockaway to manhattan is 40 minutes dude...seriously. That may be how long ti take from when you get on the train to when you get off the train...however your commute is from when you leave your front door to when you arrive at your office....adn that is certianly not 40 minutes...you are at about an hour commute to be more accurate from rockaway..and thats being generous too depending where you work in the city. That is no short commute.

Sillygirl, what would a person pay for a studio in Astoria? Thanks!

I live in Jackson Heights and I have seen ads that say "10 minutes" to Manhattan from here. I suppose it's true that if you look at your watch when you are inside the E train at the Roosevelt Station and the doors are closing, it may be possible (even likely) that when the doors open at 53rd and Lex in Manhattan that only 10 minutes have passed. but that certainly does not mean you can walk out your door and be in Manhattan in 10 minutes. You have to figure in getting to the train, getting through the crowds if there are any, waiting for the train, and all the same stuff at the other end.
Just today I was going to get the 7 train in Sunnyside and the train pulled in when I was just one stairway below the platform. However, by the time I reached the foot of the stairs to ascend (this was rush hour) the stairwell was so packed with people flooding down that it would have been swimming against the tide. I decided just to wait til they were gone (train was gone too) and I walked up in peace and waited 5-6 minutes for the next train.

Yes people always claim theya re 10 minutes or whatever from the city...the reality is...they say 10 minutes but its really 25..and if they say 30-40 minutes its at LEAST an hour from my experience. They seem to only count the time from when they are in the train to when it is pulling into their station somehow...strange. Same goes for commutes from the suburbs...the lies/fuzzy math is just as bad. My commute door to door (as in when I close my front door to when I arrive at my office in midtown) is 40 minutes EVERYDAY from Mott Haven. If I were to use the fuzzy Math (only count when I was in the trains on perfect days) it would be 20-25 minutes max....but again...that would be incorrect to say my commute were 20 minutes...but it sure sounds nice!
