Detractors of 'Cromwell-Jerome' interrupted a Department of City Planning public outreach tour of the stretch Saturday, causing the event to end early.

Protesters crashed a city-run tour Saturday of a stretch of Jerome Avenue City Planning wants to revitalize, charging that the plan would displace existing residents.
A group of crusaders protesting the city’s plan to turn a 73-block valley in the Bronx into a new neighborhood crashed a walking tour of the area Saturday.

The Department of City Planning wants to transform a strip of auto shops and parking lots between Highbridge and the Grand Concourse into a bustling hub of housing and stores called “Cromwell-Jerome.”

But detractors ripped the plan, saying it would make the area more attractive to outsiders, while pushing current residents out.

“They are betting that it’s the next best thing, but it will destroy the community,” said Jay Espy, whose group People Power Movement organized the rally.

City officials cut the public outreach tour short after protesters bearing signs saying “This is Jerome, go home” — interrupted by peppering City Planning bosses with biting questions about the plan.

“We’re looking at the full range of income and needs in the neighborhood and trying to find a way to meet them,” said Carol Samol, City Planning’s Bronx director.

This seems to be a good reason to push the project through.

Probably there's a wink-wink-nudge-nudge to those touring the neighborhood: "Don't worry, we'll soon be rid of all the riff-raff that live here now."
Perhaps a few of them heard that and got pyssed.

Maybe it should be reversed and hordes of blacks and Hispanics should regularly be walked up and down Park Avenue...and then we can listen to the duennas holler.

Don't get too excited. Highbridge is pretty run down and very hood. Take a walk there sometime and see for yourself. I went for a walk through the area and I could feel a depressing atmosphere of poverty and drug addiction there.

Not saying it can't change for the better, but if it does it will probably be one of the last Bronx neighborhoods to do so.
