I'm a 5'5" male in my middle 20s, I've been taking subway for daily commute for years.
This morning, on this extremely packed express E train, I was standing in front of a seat and holding a overhead pole while listening to music, like many other commuters.
Then all from a sudden, a pressure appeared top of my head. It's from someone's arm that crossing my head to reach the overhead-pole above me.
I turned back my head and saw this angry-looking 6'2" guy staring at me, probably blaming my head on the way of his arm to the pole.
So I tried to move, yet the train was so crowded and there wasn't any spot for me to move to. So I leaned forward towards the seat to give room to the strainer's arm, as well as reduce the pressure that my head was suffering from that arm.
Yet the pressure stays as the stranger's arm followed my leaned head. The pressure got stronger as the train start to move...
So I turned back again and said 'Excuse me' to the stranger, who answered 'what?', and looked annoyed.
....
So, how would you response to the 'what?' , assuming you were at the same situation ?
By your own admission the train was packed. Don't want people invading your space? Take a cab. I assume a certain level of space invasion on a crowded train.

change your work schedule. i would never ride the train or drive through Manhattan during rush hour commuting times.
it's sheer stupidity for a civilized society to clump everyone together in the same location at the same time. either travel earlier, or travel later. or better yet, telecommute..
