Hi;

I'm going next Spring semester to NYU and I'm looking for affordable neighborhoods to stay.
I read the article: Best Neighborhoods For College Grads In NYC, 2014 | BrickUnderground

and I notice, for example, the rent in WOODLAWN is reasonable, and it's 65 minutes away.

But I don't how convenient for commuting from NYU to WOODLAWN. Can I get a subway or bus? Is it direct or I need to change? Is the whole idea practical? and how much I expect to pay for subway/bus the ticket?

Also, do you prefer WOODLAWN or INWOOD?

Moreover, let me know if you have any advice for my situation?

FYI, I prefer my monthly rent budget not to exceed $1,500. Notice, also, my lecture in NYU finish @ 9:000 PM. So it might be a bit late.

Thanking you.

I've never heard of Woodlawn.

65 minutes seems a bit much for a commute. For $1500, I would check out neighborhoods in Queens like Astoria or Sunnyside. Your commute time would be 30-35 minutes.

Commute from Inwood, Washington Heights, and Harlem will be reasonable as well. You can find apartments in those areas within your budget.

Woodlawn is a good safe neighborhood but its really far away and also quiet and somewhat suburban. You won't get the NYC experience in Woodlawn. Not only will commuting to school be long but also commuting to the city on weekends for fun / study groups / etc.. will also be very painful.

Go look at rental listings online to get an idea of what rents cost in each neighborhood. There are many good rental sites for NYC such as streeteasy and naked apartments.

It's in the Bronx at the NE corner of Van Cortlandt Park.

If your looking for a nice and reasonable place you could actually find a real one bedroom at or even under your price range here in Bay Ridge. From the end of the line on 95th to NYU at 8 street staying on the R only takes a little under an hour. If you see an N coming in at 59th or 36th here in Brooklyn and jump on that will still take you to NYU and cut that travel time significantly!

It's considered to be a safe area. Of course, anything bad could happen at anytime, but that goes for all neighborhoods.
