Stupid idea but not really news since this was a campaign issue. Evidently parents overwhelmingly want this even though it's a bad idea.Very disappointing that Chancellor Farina has signed off on this. She should know better.
So De Blasio is keeping his word about equality in schools. However as us mere mortals recognize, this is a bad idea especially for schools with lots of misbehaving children. This should have been left to the discretion of individual schools as they are in a better position to decide. And parents get ready to shell out money for the latest and greatest phones for your kids. And teachers smile for the camera and don't throw fits in class or else worldstar!
I don't see the problem of the kids keeping the cell phones in school. After class or on recess, there shouldn't be a problem.
But, I would however, if I was the teacher, tell the kids on the first day of school. If I see or hear anyone's cell in my classroom while I'm trying to teach a lesson, I will fail you for the semester, no second chance.
Now if this retard <ayor would only ban the tourist helicopters that Bloomie re instated that Guilliani banned, we could enjoy our waterfront parks in peace......without the constant droaning noise.
Education is too old broken up person oriented. In a world where many parents have to work late or are generally always working, cell phones are the best way to keep directly in touch with your kids.
That doesn't mean that kids should be allowed to talk during class.
And actually, during class if kids want to text or do other things on their cell phones, fine. The kid is still responsible for doing their work. If they are able to do other things and learn, fine. If the cell phone is a distraction that makes them not learn well, that is fine too. Let the student be responsible for his learning. If it's reflected in the grades the parents have the opportunity to be involved.
Not really in favor of this. But prob gave in to complaints of some high income or well-connected parents. The phone is a huge distraction.
No actually the opposite. The issue was that some schools, in particular schools in the better areas, were allowing kids to bring cellphones. And there was a complaint that others schools mostly in less affuent areas that fuel De Blasio's rise were being discriminated against.
In general I don't think having cellphones is a bad thing, but I do like the idea of leaving it up to individuals schools to decide whether to allow it which has been the case.
