Hawking says we need to start exploring and colonizing other planets before it is too late.

It will probably be under sharia law, or a society where it's illegal to identify as either male or female

If we cannot life in peace with a generous, benevolent planet for which we were evolutionarily adapted, how could we hope to spend ANY time on a hostile world?
We paved paradise and put up a parking lot. How could we hope to start with a poisoned parking lot?

Nope, if mankind takes the planet to an uninhabitable brink, the planet will survive and man will go extinct, drowning in his own infected feces. Man will be no more likely to find a new home than Stephen Hawking will be to run a marathon.

The United States hasn't existed for 500 years so I think it's a bit useless to debate what will happen to this city if we don't know if the country can keep it together in that time.

uh... a little something called technology. yes the planet is in bad bad shape but we'll probably be able to fix it all, between renewable energy and other technologies that actually mend the damage. they're talking about giant skyscraper structures that will suck the CO2 out of the atmosphere. they're also talking about re-freezing the ice caps to keep sea levels steady. our technology will allow us to make earth our toy, literally.
