Hey there. Italian American early 20s native NYer, I grew up in what I guess would be the Brighton Beach/Coney Island border (Neptune Ave. and Ocean Parkway) in a coop next to Lincoln HS, but moved with parents to FL when I was 15. Hated the heat, sprawl, driving everywhere, beige stucco gated communities surrounded by pastel ghettoes, and the mix of redneckery and no habla ingles. 18 moved back to NY, currently living in a basement apartment in B'hurst in the 70's by 15th Ave. This area has a lot of history for my family but it's now basically it's a colony of China which sucks because me and my neighbors don't speak the same language and they are really standoffish and sometimes walking around I feel like I'm in another country until I see an Italian bakery or english sign..I'm also fed up because today omw home from work some African American guys said pretty openly racist stuff to me out of nowhere since I was the only white dude on the train and they were probably coming back from a "protest" or something because one of the guys was wearing a shirt with a slogan from the protests....

ANYWAYS, I don't want to leave NYC because this is my home and why should I have too anyways? But I am kind of sick of being a minority everywhere I go, crime, nastiness, hipsters, thugs etc. figure the best of both worlds would probably be out on the Island.

I have some experience with SI cause I have family on the very south shore by the Outer Bridge. Nice area and safe but brand new McMansions so I don't think I would even be able to find an apartment over there and I would need a car because the only bus service there is the s74 by target. SI on the whole seems nice accept for the North Shore. I would like an area that's safe with some walk ability (a bodega and pork store within reach would be nice but retail too) decent transit links, safety and a decent amount of apartment rentals around $900. Would prefer to live in a multi family house over a building. I hear SI is the most Italian place in America, however I don't mind living near others as long as it is safe and there is no thugs walking around.

What neighborhoods on SI come to mind?
