The story made it to the news, over 100 cars got their tires slashed in Midwood by some idiot with nothing better to do. My car was one of them. Both passenger side tires were cut. My car insurance deductible was way higher than it was to fix the vandalism so I paid out of pocket.
Now that they arrested the guy, are the affected people able to sue him? What kind of restitution is there?

I think it's unfortunate that in NYC there are people who have so little respect for personal property. That being said, even if you sue and win, there is no guarantee the person will have the means to pay.

Yes, you probably could sue him in small claims court. You could probably win. Collecting anything, well that's another matter entirely.

good luck enforcing the judgment if you win.he's probably some crazy nut or homeless guy. it's going to cost you more to sue, with court filing fees and all. are you for real?

X2. If your lucky he lives at home. Go after his parents. Put a lien on their home if they own something.

It's kind of ironic that they originally thought it could be a hate crime against Jews, since it's primarily a Jewish neighborhood, but it turns out the suspect is also Jewish.

It's a hateful crime but not a hate crime.

You can sue... Now when you win, which you will because he's an idiot, you will now have a judgement which you have to collect. Also you could petition the criminal court for restitution which is not a dis-chargeable debt during the criminal phase.

I am not sure of New York law but in most states since this is related to a crime it is not allowed to be dis-chargeable under bankruptcy proceedings.

It's a sickening feeling to come out in the morning and find knife wounds in all 4 tires. Been there.
