Sure they have places to go to if they have family in other states or countries. All those people fleeing NYC are not middle class people. They are POOR people who are leaving because they CANNOT afford NYC or cannot afford to RETIRE in NYC.

The poor and ghetto people from eastern Brooklyn are being shoved out into the growing ghetto areas of Long Island to places like Hicksville and Brentwood.
If they stay regional, a lot of the poor being shoved out of NYC move to Pennsylvania. But those are just the ones who stay regional.

The New Yorkers moving to Florida and the South are POOR people.

Good times? Haha... Flordia has seen huge increases in welfare, food stamps and medicaid! A lot of development but totally dependent on tourism. Any clue on what Disney pays its employess? Job market and pay out there sucks. I have never seen so many ppl dependent on the service sector! Property tax is low but they'll nail you in other ways! Tske a closer look at tolls for example. Hint its not just the bridges!

It's not like the poor are/were doing any better in NYC. Yes, there may be more services, but the social mobility is extremely limited and crime is still an issue. You can be poor down south and still live a better life than in NYC

Working class folks do better in the South, Middle class probably break even while the rich may do better in NY due to cultural attractions and economic activity

same can be said about large swaths of NYC - as well as the tolls here!

IMO, the biggest difference between poor in the south and NY is that the poor are actually living in their own homes in the south - even if it has wheels. The poor in NY rely on public assistance for everything - housing, food, transportation, free breakfast and lunch for their kids in school, etc.

This is patently untrue. A large part are middle class retirees who know that their money will go much farther in FL than in NY (C or S). A lot are just sick of the cold winters. I have family who moved to FL, just for that reason (then got bored and easily found a decent paying job.)

I sense a lot of unwarranted NYC chauvinism here.

Meaning they are poor and as retirees couldn't really afford to retire NYC. People try to hide behind this middle class crap instead of admitting the truth.

If they could have afforded to stay in NYC, they would have.

NY has a number of universities. It's going to take a lot of hard work, and the person is going to have to reinvent themselves and reinvent their social network but social mobility is very possible in NYC.

So working/middle class do not exist. Its just poor or rich in NYC? If I was poor and cant afford a ticket to a new place to live, I'd just stay and remain on welfare, section or NYCHA and live off of corporate welfare. Again If I was middle class making 42-70k and struggling to get by, Id be doing more and more relocation homework.
