If turning their backs only meant showing de Blasio disrespect, I'd remain opposed, but wouldn't actively argue against the practice (it's just not in good taste, regardless of any policy differences). However, I believe that doing so is a distraction to what is supposed to be a day of mourning for family and friends of the fallen, and so actively oppose such actions.
For homegoing services, at least from the view here, it's the presence that's important, as opposed to the wear, so long as the wear isn't causing any type of distraction! (i.e., 'very short mini-skirt'! However, many churches have covering cloth for the occasion, just in case!)
