My husband and I will be moving in the next month to NYC. We have four little kids (oldest is 6) and they are very active and I fear moving to a tiny space with no yard since they say home with me during the day. My husband just got a job near FreedomTower...his Cost of Living Adjustment is based on what zip code we end up in so if we move to the city we will get more money but I am sure will have a smaller space. If we move to the city he will make about 190K but to Westchester about 160K. I am torn between living farther out but then seeing my husband less because of commute (plus the cost of commuting) or just living in NYC or finding a good safe neighborhood with good schools and some green space for my kids to play. We will likely only be here two years but will probably buy because it makes the most sense with our relocations package. I guess I would ask what are the best areas in the city for a commute to Freedom tower that also allow for more space for a large family...or should I just move to Westchester or New Jersey? I sort of want to experience NYC in the two years we are there so I thought it would be fun living downtown but would the headache of living there with so many little kids outweigh the adventure of it all? Thanks for any advice!
If anything, NJ will definitely be a better commute by mass transit because there are ways to avoid doing a rush hour transfer at midtown. Some places even offer bus park & ride to downtown or one can get off at Hoboken and take the ferry. But if you insist on Westchester, you could look at the rivertowns and drive down the Henry Hudson to the Battery Parking garage.
Why not try the areas directly surrounding the freedom tower? They're all super safe.
First of all, it's not the Freedom Tower.
Second, did you see the part about them having FOUR young children? There's not a whole lot of inventory of apartments big enough to house that kind of a family.
Of course, this largely depends on the family's budget, which we have year to hear about.
Sorry...I should have been more specific. My husband will make roughly 170k and we will have about 20k for down payment. Sorry I am not a native New Yorker so didn't know the proper term - I meant One World Trade Center. I don't think living in the city is an option for us...we need more space than I think we could find there. I guess I would ask would you suggest New Jersey or Westchester County to raise young children. Thanks so much for your help.
Oh dear. $20,000 would be barely enough to get you into a rental ($4,000 for first month's rent, $4,000 for last month's rent, $4,000 for security deposit, and $7200 for the broker's fee).
Not sure what COL adjuster you are using, but I can't see any situation where its cheaper to live in Manhattan with 4 kids than the suburbs.
Its expensive no matter what part of the metro area you live, but with 4 kids, you get more bang for your buck in Westchester or Long Island than Manhattan.
I have only 2 kids, and I'm off to the burbs once my house closes.
I would not recommend moving to the city with 4 children on 190K. And I doubt it would make sense to buy if you will only stay in the house for two years, plus 20K is not enough for the down payment. New Jersey would probably be more convenient to your husband's office than Westchester. You might get more advice on NJ if you post in the NJ forum.
