I'm a pretty big fan of mushrooms and want to try some outside the usual varieties (white, portabello, crimini, shiitake, etc). I recently picked up Chanterelle (love these) and Black Trumpet (never tried them) from a Whole Foods near me, but I'm wondering if there's somewhere I can go to get these and more... dried is okay, but I'd prefer to get them fresh/not dried, if possible...
Any ideas? I asked over in the Long Island forum, too, just in case you get deja-vu if you go over there...
I thought from your headline that you were asking where you could pick mushrooms. Because, after all, why would one buy any that weren't edible? My grandmother used to prowl strangers' front lawns picking mushrooms.
Anyway, I was going to suggest that you'd probably get better answers on Chowhound with this kind of question.

I said "edible" so no one would think I was looking for magic mushrooms. Whether I am or not is not an important piece of information for this board...
But if there are places where I can pick good edible mushrooms, that'd be awesome, too.
ETA:
I've just checked out Chowhound (never heard of that place before... so I just signed up ). Read a lot about the Manhattan Fruit Exchange, Garden of Eden, and SOS Chef.
Thoughts on those?

As you found, your best bet is Whole Foods for fresh (Chinatown for dried) but the prices at WH are blindingly high for anything but the common agaricus, the cheap white/tan mushrooms available everywhere. I buy them for $1 or $1.29 a box at Aldi's
I have a basic knowledge of wild mushrooms, enough to avoid poisoning myself, but finding wild mushrooms in Manhattan is almost impossible.
I thought I was onto something in the woods of Inwood Park. The weather was perfectly cool and moist from the day before but not a single 'shroom.
