I think the TD fee is 6%. If you don't have an account (nor want one, though it's highly recommended) ask some of your friends if they have an account. The fee will be waived, but they'll still give you cash instead of depositing it in their account.
I just keep my coins in an old take-out from some Greek food that was cleaned. When I pay for things in cash, I dig into it and take out the right amount. Places like CVS are great. With those self check-out machines, I can use all of my coins that way.
Really haven't bothered with coins in years. Especially since got an EZ-Pass, parking meters began taking credit/ATM cards, and even laundromats went over to cards.
Only time ever get coins is if making a return at Rite Aid or Duane Reade. Sometimes for whatever reasons they won't put a return back onto the card where the charge originally occurred, but give a "cash" instead.
US government needs to man up and just take pennies out of circulation. They are a joke and cost more money than they are worth.
