As any reader of Tom Wolfe's classic comedy of NYC manners, Bonfire of the Vanities, would know, it's easily possible to go broke on 450k a year--if you're trying to maintain a 1% lifestyle.
A better question to the OP would be, "you tell me--are you planning on taking the family on Alpine ski trips? Maintaining a summer house? Sending your kids to expensive private schools? Keeping one or more late model vehicles in a Manhattan garage? Hiring any domestic help?"
And all of a sudden that kind of money starts to look like peanuts.
Is $450k a year roughly equal to $250k in other parts of the country excluding San Francisco?
The OP's family should be fine.
