NYC homeless population tops 59K, a record high - NY Daily News

And de Blasio is making all these non-profits orgs rich that are supposed to help house the poor but are becoming slum lords themselves.

Gentrification is a good thing, it cleans out the rats where they nests.

Nice try with trying to blame the mayor for this when the REAL culprit is that old man who should have been out office after his second term.

DeBlasio is doing all he can to try to rectify 12 years of on purpose neglect by an old sheltered man who barely left the borough of Manhattan.

Well, after year 1, he isn't making much progress. Homelessness is UP, income inequality is UP. How long will he get away with blaming the other guy and when is he going to own it?

Some of the changes Bloomberg made in the city are permanent. He rezoned industrial neighborhoods for high end commercial and residential neighborhoods.

Many apartments that were available for welfare clients have been converting into housing for wealthier people. So even with an increase in welfare payments you have far fewer landlords willing to take government programs.

The city would have to build new low income housing, which will take time. And we know this housing won't be in Manhattan or any part of Brooklyn and Queens within a 30 minute commute to Midtown.

Bloomberg was a competent mayor and did a lot of good for the city, but one thing he neglected was the homeless population and the problem of income inequality. They simply weren't priorities for many years.

No one can turn that around in a year. You've got unrealistic expectations here. I'd say after year 3 if there isn't a significant decline in homelessness then yeah--DeBlasio isn't helping either. As for income inequality, I'm not sure anyone can realistically tackle that at the local level alone. It's become part of our national structure to keep the majority of the population at low income levels so that they can most profitably be exploited.

Look at the two horrible consecutive winter weathers we have had in NYC since deblasio took the office.

Is that a simple co-incidence....

Politics and justice (Just us) are for people who already have privilege over everyone, not really anyone that doesn't.

You should already know who that generally is or is not by now.

I thought that was supposed to be Obama's fault.

If the homeless and the poor gets pushed out of NYC, income inequalities will look better as the middle class becomes the bottom followed by upper middle class becoming the middle, then wealthy.

Shove all the homeless people in De Blasio's Park Slope house.
