Default Sunnyside?

Would love some opinions on living in Sunnyside. Is the 7 train the one that gets terrible reviews for poor service on NY1 (or something) every year?

It's not a bad area. I wouldn't mind living there.

The 7 is one of the most frequent routes in the system. It's running above maximum capacity, so one little delay will screw the entire line. Either way, if you plan to live there, it's either the 7 or the bus to the Queens Plaza were you'll have an assortment of trains to choose from.

Can't speak for the commute because I don't live there but I like the area. I started to work out at the NYSC at the newest branch in Sunnyside - open only about a few weeks. Sunnyside Gardens on the north side of queens blvd is beautiful, and there are lots of nice looking apt and coop bldgs around there. A friend and I took a walk around the neighborhood a few weeks ago so she could check out the area for apartments. We both liked the north side better than the south side of queens blvd but I would live in either.

Skillman Ave is very nice too with some handsome looking places to eat (didn't try them) and grocery shop.

My friend and I looked in Jackson Heights first (where I live) and she thought she liked JH better because there is more activity and more to do/see. Sunnyside felt quiet in comparison (though there are some VERY quiet areas of JH if you want quiet nearby the action). JH has the E/F/R/V trains if you are looking for more commuting options.

Sunnyside seems to be the next neighborhood for people getting priced out of Brooklyn. Rents are very reasonable for a place so close to manhattan.

For info about food options and groceries, check chowhound outer boroughs and do a search for sunnyside.

What and where is the action you speak of in JH?
Do you get a lot of airport noise there in JH?

These are the two 'hoods I've been considering moving to, but I also do not know this area of queens very well.

Flight path is not over Jackson Heights historic district, so - no.

The activity I'm thinking is on 37th Ave, a commercial strip running from about 72nd street all the way up. Perhaps you should consider a visit. It's a very busy commercial strip with lots of grocery stores, small restaurants, post office, fruit places, street vendors, cafes, diners etc. There aren't very many 'hip' hangouts or comfy bars - it is more utilitarian. But it's also a known destination for people who love food and there are many discussions about food in JH on chowhound.com outer boroughs.

Guess it depends on what you are looking for. If you're looking for a Brooklyn-hip style action, you won't really find that. But there is plenty to do and explore and a multitude of nationalities and different types of people - sidewalks are always busy.

You can see what people in the neighborhood are talking about on Jackson Heights Life - Jackson Heights NY - Queens . That may give you a better sense of what's there and not there.

and fyi if you are looking in Sunnyside I saw a building just north of Queens blvd on 43rd St. on the left side of the street that had a "rentals" banner hanging on it. The banner looked new, not one of those super old signs you see sometimes that look like they could have been there 20 years.

Henna - Thanks for the info. I will certainly head over to that area and check it out.
And no I am not looking for Brooklyn type hipster - gentrified 'hood. I prefer the pulse of people without trust funds.
