Hi! I am a single woman in my early sixties, am a New York City native originally of East Harlem. I also lived in the theatre district on the West Side of Manhattan and Kips Bay area. I moved to another county in New York State 15 years ago. I am now interviewing for jobs in Manhattan and would like to rent an affordable one bedroom apt. in the Bronx. Parkchester is my main choice and I even picked up an application form. I still like the social/cultural scene in Manhattan and wonder if I may still be safe coming home later at night on the subway in areas of the Bronx that I am considering moving to: Country Club, Parkchester, University Heights, etc. Any suggestions which parts of the Bronx might be suitable for me to move to? I am not concerned about being in the minority of any socio-economic setting because I am multi-cultural and well-educated. I am looking for an environment where I may meet like-minded folks. Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated. Mahasi
It's safe. Violent crime in the Bronx is beyond exaggerated. The vast majority of it is between individuals that know one another or involved in the "ghetto" lifestyle.
Anyway, it is safer than UH but I guess a bit more sketchy than CC. Worth it though as it's a worlds more convenient than CC.
Is there anything new on this subject? It interests me because I would like to retire to Parkchester in a few years (exciting city life at a price affordable to a senior on a lowish fixed income), so have been following crime & safety news in Parkchester. Is it my wrong impression that violent crime in Parkchester has increased in the past year, or is it real, and why do you think it is happening? Particularly there were several violent attacks on immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh or thereabouts - why do you think that is? ((I am not from Pakistan or anything similar, but am an immigrant, so I find any ethnic/racial hate crime very scary; how come in New York City of all the places??)

I live in Parkchester. I haven't heard of any attacks on immigrants. If there is, please post the link.
Any type of attack like that would be a hate crime, and would probably get citywide attention, given that the neighborhood has a large South Asian population.
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to cut and paste links here, but just search by "Parkchester hate crime", and it will bring up several incidents over the past few years. I remember reading of some others in a local paper when I visited Parkchester about 2 years ago. A Bangladeshi man was beaten unconscious in January this year (somebody also told me that a Parkchester small business owner who was slashed and robbed of substantial $ last month was also South Asian, but that may not be true - the victim shown from the back in a video I just found on the internet speaks English without an accent, and seems to be white).
Oh man, I remember seeing how many pages this thread was in it's heyday, and I never had time to read it. Work is slow today so.....man, that was entertaining.
So, to get back to the topic -Scatman, since you live in Parkchester, can you say anything about my questions? Is crime actually increasing in Parkchester, is it targeted towards non-dominant Bronx groups (ie, people who are not Latino or Afroamerican), and why is that? I kind of really liked Parkchester, but wouldn't want to spend my retirement in the middle of a territorial war. Parkchester publicly prides itself on diversity, but attacking people who are not L or AA surely doesn't seem like diversity.

Personally, I don't see any 'territorial wars', or any issues like that. I come home at late hours of the night, without any issues. And like I said, any racially-biased crimes would not only get on the local, but city papers, expecially in this neighborhood!
Well, the problems that Bangladeshis have in Parkchester are all over the internet, it does not seem to be a secret... I am just trying to figure out whether I, as an older woman from Eastern Europe, would be harassed if I move to live in Parkchester. I personally like places that are as international as possible, and am a very private person that does not care to be a part of any particular group or ethnic culture - just looking for a cheap and convenient place to live, but let's face it - if being a Latino or an Afroamerican is an informal requirement for living normally in Parkchester, then I obviously could not live there. I am just looking for an honest and truthful opinion/advice about that.

The answer is a complete NO!
I don't know where you getting your information on the internet from, but an FYI, Parkchester's board has quite a few people of South Asian descent. That includes it's president! So, if one still feels that "being a Latino or Afroamerican is an informal requirment for living normally in Parkchester".......!
Alright, as you can imagine, that is the answer that I would much prefer. But I am not entirely convinced. The internet information about attacks on Bangladeshis is totally easy to find - there are about dozen news items just ragarding this last incident in Jan, then there is something about a street protest that Bangladeshis organized in 2013 after somebody was stabbed in the back, etc.
