I posted some samples that were around 1000 and one under 1000. You just have to know how to do a good search on Craigslist.
These are not in nice areas mind you, but working class people rent them out all the time.

And whenever something seems too good to be true, it usually is. They're showing the INSIDE of the place. Then the hard part, by the time you contact the owner maybe it's rented already. Housing in NYC doesn't just languish on the market unless is sales. Sales can languish a little longer but halfway decent rentals are gone in a flash.
Parkchester is the only one that can get you in a one bedroom (I happen to know this is true) my daughter lives in Parkchester and has done so for the last fifteen years. The buildings are well kept (imo) and she gets good services.

There are apartments regularly available on Craigslist for 1k in the Bronx. How long they are on the market doesn't matter. Their condition doesn't matter. The topic of this forum is how to working class people in NYC survive. As in the working poor.
They rent whatever apartments they can find (the cheapest ones) and they have some sort of government subsidy. That is how they get by, in a nutshell.
Harlem is costlier than the Bronx. Haven't you heard it is now desirable? What happens when an area becomes desirable?
Harlem, especially Spanish Harlem is full of NYCHAs and all that ghetto isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

It would be very hard without other family or extended family/friends that can help. Today, New York caters to Rich. Middle income folk are sucker punched with taxes, in some shape or form in NYC. Did you know NYC wants us to pay to cart our garbage away? The poor who have managed to remain are hanging on by a thread. Some of them are content some not so much, that's why they leave.
Market rate apartments + are the majority in the city. Good luck with your endeavors.

Yes and right alongside those ghettoes are high falut'n high rises smack dab in the middle. I had to leave after having been born and raised there because I could no longer afford it. Twenty one years ago, I left and it is certainly on a rebound now. Brownstones in Harlem at one point (those run down places) fetch upwards of $1MM and more.
