If my new bridge and tunnel suggestion go nowhere, there is another plan to consider. The newest innovation in NYC today are the proposed flood-surge barriers on every tributary surrounding the city. You can thank Sandy for that.
The location I'm focusing on is outside the harbor South of the V-N bridge. This should be built NORTH of the V-N bridge between Richmond & Brooklyn.
THIS barrier will serve TWO purposes. It would include two-railroad tracks for rail-freight traffic and control flooding (NO roadway-first concept).
These tracks would CONNECT the Bay Ridge freight branch to the R-O-W of the abandoned SIRT North-shore freight line.
Since THIS barrier is movable, it will be opened to allow the newest mega container ships access to the inner-harbor and closed when trains are on it. For safety and security reasons, trains can NOT idle on the viaduct while it is opened.
It may look strange at first, but that will change once everyone finally sees how beneficial a continuous rail-freight line between Boston & Philadelphia can be.
This is what you would call a New York moment, big idea-big outcome. You can thank me later.
A sad note, from a recent video I viewed, ONE of the two freight-tracks on the Hellsgate bridge has been removed. I can't believe that the volume of rail-freight traffic in NYC has been reduced to that level on that bridge of all places. I hope that this track and roadbed are being repaired and will be replaced soon?
