Great post! Hello ALL. I'm new to the forums and this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for all the links. I can't wait to gather as much info as possible to make our big leap to the Big Apple!
I have some great friends in Queens, Ridgewood area. Which is the are we will end up in. I've traveled to NYC for the past 4 years several times a year. I know it's not the same to visit as it is to live there. But we do make a big effort to stay a week at a time. Staying with friends instead of a hotel has helped to break down the ups and downs of real life.
Though nothing can ever truly prepare us for such a big move....coming from Dallas, Texas, with two boys ages 13 and 10 years old. We've had many discussions, trips and plenty of hands on to make our final HUGE choice. Nervous as hell about it but desire the challenge.
Please wish us lots of luck!

OK, so I'm moving to NYC in August for law school (NYLS - New York Law School). It's located in Tribeca...
Anyway, my budget is about 2000$, and I wouldnt mind taking a studio. Where is the closest AND safest area to live??

First, I would ask that you please don't yell. Writing in all uppercase is considered yelling and somewhat rude.
How much are you willing to spend on living expenses? You're going to need to calculate your AFTER TAX income. How long a commute are you willing to have? Where will you be working? Do you want your daughter to attend public school?
In short, we need more information. And, please, don't write in all uppercase.

Go to the front page for New York City. There is a large blue button on the left side of the pages just a tiny bit down from the top (under a few other things) that says "new thread". Click on that and go from there.

moving to NY - overwhelmed or lazy
I realize that everyone seems to be posting these rather vague 'help me' messages, so I will try to be more specific. I am starting grad school at Sarah Lawrence in the fall. My partner and I will be moving to NY late this summer. I tried to figure it out on my own, but now I'm either overwhelmed or getting lazy...
We have very little money. Right now we split $550 for rent and utilities. Seems like there, $1000 a month is cheap. Do the jobs pay to make up for the difference?
We are an interracial lesbian couple. NY is supposed to be the *****, international mecca. Still, I imagine that there are neighborhoods where we would be more or less comfortable.
We don't need the yuppie thing but, you know - I like coffee and cool little spots to hang out. Bookstores, not expensive handbags. You get the idea.
Any suggestions for somewhere affordable and reasonably safe (for us) ?
Thanks. I do appreciate your knowledge and experience.
EJ

U of Mich or Columbia, the matter of cities!
Hi everyone! We need urgent help because we should make a final decision by 15 April!
My fiance and I are both accepted to Columbia University and U of Michigan and we are considering to join Columbia (although from the ranking point of view, Columbia is 27 and UM is 5). However, we have realized that cost of living is really high in NYC (specifically the apartment rentals). We have estimated to get the stipend of 5000$ per month from Columbia University, but we are not really sure that this amount of money is sufficient to have a nice life in NYC.
Could please give us an estimation of how we should spend our budget on each of the following items:
1. One bedroom apartment: We have considered to live in Moriningside Heights, Astoria, Greenpoint or Williamsburg (if you have any other good neighborhood in mind please let us know). There is another option of on-campus housing which we do not have much info about (the site needs user pass) and we really appreciate any info (such as rental, facilities, environment) on on-campus housing.
2. Cost living: which might include food, clothing, commuting, cell-phone and some other expenses of the apartment like gas, water and laundry. How much will do the mentioned items cost per person?
3. Entertainment: this is a very important criteria for our decision; after considering the amount of money spent on the above items, how much money is left for us for entertainment? is this amount acceptable to fairly use the available entertainments? In fact, we are choosing Columbia over U-M just because we see lots and lots of entertainments in NYC, however if we won't be able use them, what difference does it make between Ann Arbor and NYC?!!
Thank you so much in advance.

Soory about the uppercase. I am currently looking at income of $6000pm. I would like to know how are the public schools or should on consider private schools? I do not mind traveling plus minus 20m to work as I currently travel more than 3x that to work alone. Currently I am negotiating a position in New York itself. We are not one that will visits all the night life only on occassions. I think right now we would have to consider my daughter first as she is 17 and this will be a very huge step for her alone.
