Also check Village Voice. I would not recommend wasting a lot of time with Craig's List.

You should also look back through these forums there have been lots of posts about management companies that rent direct, and avoid broker fees. These tend to be, but not always, larger, doorman buildings that are pricey. There are several buildings in Murray Hill that can be rented without broker fees. Links to some management companies can be found listed here Property Managers -- NY Bits

I apologize in advance if this has been posted, but I did a quick search and couldn't find something that was conducive to my question.

My boyfriend and I are looking at moving to either Brooklyn or Queens. My boyfriend has a job lined up and we have quite a bit in savings. We're looking to spend no more than $1500 and we have two very sweet cats. I found a useful thread about which neighborhoods to live in Queens, but couldn't find one on Brooklyn. We're in our mid-20's, but not in anyway hipsterish.

We want to be around supermarkets, subway stops, and a park, if possible. We're not particular about noise or parking; we're just looking for somewhere that we won't have to worry about walking around at night.

Also, since we have cats, what are some examples of pet policies in apartments? For example, in Pittsburgh, where we live right now, our landlord asks for a $50 deposit per cat. I heard people having to pay a monthly rent for their animals to live in their apartments--is this true?

Has anyone here tried out MyWorkOutSpot.com yet? I go to NYSC and have been using them to link up with workout partners.

Cant seem to find one compatible with my schedule yet but it's pretty useful.

ok...i have read through all the posts in this thread....

here's my situation:
i am currently employeed with the Dept of Transportation in NC as an engineer, salary is $67k. i am considering a move to the NY area, maybe not specifically NYC, but that is a possibility. maybe within an hour or so's commute to/from NYC. i will be looking to get another job with the DOT in NY and would like to make my move sometime next summer or early fall. i am a single (separated) female, early 40's.

i'm assuming that the salary for a civil engineer would be comparable to or more than what i make now. my question(s) is this: should i be applying for positions with the DOT now or wait a while, will it hurt me to not currently be a resident? i may be able to move up there prior to having a job, but i'm not at all sure that will be feasible.

i just dont really know how to proceed with this...job first, housing first, etc.....

thanks - karen.

I think you have to be a resident for most city jobs. I even heard that there was a limited distance you could live to NYC in order to be a city worker.

And, don't forget if you are not a city resident and are a municipal employee, you have to pay NYC the equivalent of what you would have paid as a city resident in city income tax.

Default Greenpoint or Williamsburg

Within the year I am moving to either Greenpoint or Williamsburg but want more info on what parts are close to good bars, live music (esp. punk), and the like, I guess an area with something always going on. Also I am looking at CUNY, which schools are better of the bunch? and have a decent commute from Greenpoint or Williamsburg?
Thanks a ton

I am originally from NY. Born raised and educated. I relocated to NC about one year ago and have not found a job since. I want to return to NY very much. It's a great place to live inspite of it's problems. However, I have to find a place first and a job.

Greenpoint and Williamsburg are corny and played out. Don't contribute anymore to the process. Let the real people of the neighborhood salvage whats left after the occupation.
Brooklyn College is a great school. Also Kingsborough Community College has some great programs if you find the right one.
I graduated kingsborough and loved it, the campus is beautiful, surrounded by water with its own private beach!
I'm currently at Brooklyn College studying to be a social worker, professors are great and th campus is a classic beauty.
