I went to medical school in Washington Heights. More than likely that apartment is EAST of Broadway, somewhere I would NEVER walk....

Hi,
I used to live in Brooklyn, NY, I love it!
I used to pay $900/month for a Brooklyn apartement, where it is safe and closed to the subway station.
I miss NY.

Only commercial rents have dropped. Residential rents haven't changed very much, maybe a little.

There aren't many towns in that size range in the metropolitan area...YOu might want to post on the NJ board.

An "hour outside the city" is a very amorphous concept. You will find whenever you talk to folks from the NYC area that they describe their neighborhood by reference to its proximity to Manhattan, and universally underestimate the distance by any measure that matters. If you listen to suburbanites, everyone is "an hour [east, west, north] of the city," provided the question was how long would it take to drive to Manhattan at midnight with no traffic.
You can indeed be pretty far from the city and be within an hour train ride. However, that hour train ride only gets you to Grand Central or Penn Station. John Jay is on 10th Avenue & 59th St. Depending upon time of day and timing, you are probably looking at 25-35 minute subway & walk after arriving on the commuter rail to get to John Jay. Of course, you also need to get to the suburban train station from your house/apartment with some time to spare, so a "one hour train ride to Manhattan" is really more like a two hour commute door-to-door.
