That post by Kimberly had me on the floor laughing!!!!
"Always travel in pairs in Manhattan"??
What?!!!!!!!!! 99.99% of New Yorkers don't travel in pairs!
Kimberly, are you've been to New York, let alone lived here??? I've never read anything as outlandish as that on here, ever! I hope nobody takes her advise seriously, because all of it is nothing more than bs!

I really appreciate reading through these posts. My husband and I are skipping town (we live in Phoenix, AZ) and heading for NYC because it was always our dream to live there. We're fixing to move to NYC sometime btwn now and spring 2009.
The posts on this board are really helpful with getting familiar with what's going on in NYC, what neighborhoods I might want to check out, etc. !
We hail originally from the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Seattle, Spokane, Idaho), moved to Phoenix early 2001.
I have questions...
* What's a bodega?
* My worry: In Seattle, when the dot-com boom came along, really funky cool neighborhoods got overrun by Californians (Fremont & Capitol Hill). The funky, artsy communities all but disappeared & both places are now heavily commercialized caricatures of themselves. Beautiful little mountain towns all became one big chunk of 'cookie cutter hell'. Is this similar to what's going on in the boros? I don't want to help kick the culture out of NYC... the culture is the reason I want to go there.
Thanks !!

I never understood why they call them "bodegas". In my part of town (Hell's Kitchen / Midtown West) they're called "delis", a much fitting name in my opinion.
PurplePainter,
Don't worry, the culture is still here! That's what drove me here too (I work in the art world) and I'm enjoying it. Museums, art galleries, theaters (if you like that), cultural organizations of any kind... it's all here. Yes, it's gotten expensive and many artists live in The Bronx or New Jersey instead of Brooklyn or Manhattan.
But New York City is still the cultural and arts capital of the world and it shows. It's all over. Take my word- You'll love it! Just make sure you make enough money to enjoy it all (we're the capital of the world and so we're insanely expensive, unfortunately).

Working on it!!
Thanks for the definition, Henna & Manhattan-ite.
I'm giving myself plenty of time to be Feels like our last opportunity to truly follow our dreams. I look through the pics in that top post when I need inspiration !!
We're tightwads anyway, so I think we'll do well.
I have a question though... if we are in a recession come spring 2009, how badly does NYC get hit in recessions when it comes to jobs? I hear apts would likely be easier to find (and cheaper if we get really lucky). Is that so?
Thank you!!

Upper West Side is OK. Western Brooklyn is OK.
How much money you need to survive in New York for three months? Depends on what you plan to do! Just survive? Enjoy? Live life to the fullest?
Survive: 3,000 dollars a month.
Enjoy: 5,000 dollars a month.
Life to the fullest: as much as you can plus credit cards.
