if the apartment is so great, why would you need to look for another apartment next year?

Check out Hopstop.com for the best public transit info in NYC to get from point A to point B. Gives subway lines, bus routes, walking distance, and length of travel time.

Is it possible to find a one bedroom under $1,000 a month in Manhattan? If not, where?

No, not possible even in the worst areas of Manhattan or most of the boroughs. A studio apartment in a questionable borough neighborhood far from Manhattan, yes. Double your budget and you can live in a decent area in Manhattan in a small one bedroom with a long walk to the subway.

Default Moving to new york

Hi, we are a young couple coming from california, we are being relocated to NY and since the only job guaranteed so far is my husband's we are looking for something not very expensive but in a nice neighborhood. We've being looking for apartments and there are really nice ones in the harlem area, but we are afraid of getting in a bad neighborhood. Do you have any suggestions? We are looking for a 1 bedroom ap. maybe close to grocery stores and malls. thnks!

What exactly is not very expensive? Can you give a price range?

Where in California are you coming from? Central Harlem and East Harlem are two of the rougher neighborhoods in Manhattan. Personally I would suggest that If you can't find something in Manhattan in your budget I would look to neighborhoods in the outer boroughs.

We need budget numbers with these questions. The definition of "not very expensive" varies widely from person to person.

As I suggested months ago, we should pin a thread for people to ask questions about New York. These threads are irritating, and there's always one bit of vital info that the OP forgets to put in (this time it was a budget).

Agree, or there needs to at least be posting guidelines stickied. Rule of thumb: phrase questions with concrete info and do not use ambiguities. What does "nice" mean to you, what is "cheap", what is "close", what is "large", and so on.

imho, the sticky thread for people to post these questions didn't work. With one long thread it becomes unclear whose post you're responding to and even if you quote the thing you're replying to, the whole thread becomes unwieldy and disjointed.

I think jeffcon's suggestion is better - that there should be posting guidelines (jeff - want to take a stab at a list of questions that should be answered by the OPs?) and then if there's a vague question such as the one in this thread, someone could just point them to the guidelines and wait for them to answer the questions before proceeding.
