Are you kidding???? You can not afford to live there with kids! I live in Charlotte, NC, make almost twice as that w/no kids and still....I am hesitant to move to NY. Please wait. I'm not sure what part of NY you plan to move, but $85,OOO w/kids-anything can happen. Job loss etc....then what?

That's funny! You make twice as much and you live in Charlotte, NC and you're afraid to move to NYC with no kids. Man, live life and do it! I lived in Charlotte, NC for 14 years before moving to LA and getting out was one of the best yet scariest decisions I made in my life. Yes, I was very comfortable yet sooooo bored. We're moving to NYC and we'll most likely settle down in Brooklyn. Crazy! I know, but I crave change and its always been good to me. Thanks for the info!

Uh.. I'd like to estimate that over 50% of the people who live here make equal or less to the number given there, so.. I don't know where you're going with this.

Hi,
I live on an outer island so things are very expensive (when they finally come in). Can you give me some price points for basic things such as milk, fruits, clothes, gasoline, whatever you like/can think of just so I can get an idea of the difference. I know housing and taxes are high in NYC, but I hear other things are not so much (at least compared to here).
Thanks.

I know the prices are expensive in the islands, such as Hawaii, due to the cost of transport. But for some examples since I just did some weekly grocery shopping this past weekend,
1/2 Gallon Tropicana Orange Juice = $2.75
Dozen large eggs - $1.69
Vitamin Water (12oz I think?) - 10 bottles for $10
Bananas - $0.59/lb
Nectarines - 5 for $2
Gas (Regular) - $1.89 (estimated, forgot the exact cents)
I can't think of anything else...

danameless--thanks so much! How interesting--most the items you listed are half price (except vitamin water, don't know about that). Gas is about $2.60 today. Food is extremely expensive and only so much will grow in your yard and now we're having a problem with rat lung disease on all plants (from snails and slugs) and kanapis and mosquito times (ah, paradise). It's hard sometimes just to get things--not food so much, but everything else. My sister's clock radio broke and she had to wait 10 days for the next shipment. I'm guessing this doesn't happen so much in NY. I never had that problem on the mainland, at least.
Besides rent, what would be more expensive in NY? I have to have a car here, so that'd be cheaper. How do utilties work? I hear HI has the some of the highest electricity in the US.

TAXES!!!! We have NYC, NY State and Federal (of course) taxes to pay. Food, as a rule, is expensive in Manhattan (more than in the other four boroughs), as are staples, such as paper towels, detergent. I get them from BJ's or Costco whenever possible.

I am a 32 year old south african lady planning on moving t NY to start a career in showbusiness. I wanna sing, act and dance and I wanna start off by doing short courses.
I obviously need a job first before I can get a Visa. It's difficult for me to get a job overseas without a Visa. I'm sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Any advice will be appreciated
Thanks in adv
