I would never send anyone to look at Bed-Stuy. ANYONE. But there are parts of Washington Heights and Inwood that aren't too bad. It is a bit of a schlep to midtown, however.

I think you could try Astoria in Queens which less is not more than 30 min. commute.
If you are willing for a 45 min. commute, you can probably find a studio apt. for approx. $1000 in Rego Park or maybe Forest Hills in Queens.

My girlfriend and I will be relocating to NYC in the fall...right now things are kind of up in the air, but it's looking pretty good that she'll have a job in the $40,000/yr range. I'm still hunting. We are strongly considering Astoria. I have heard and read so much about it, that it's close to Manhattan, relatively cheap, etc. I find it hard to believe that it's still such a great place for young people without huge incomes, considering the press it gets. Is it still possible to find a one bedroom in Astoria for $1200-1500 or is it totally combed over? Should we look at Long Island City as a possible alternative? She will most likely be working in the Upper East Side. And I doubt that I'm going to be able to match her income, unless I get very lucky (like she did). Can two people live relatively well on say a total of $60,000-$70,000/yr in Astoria or Long Island City? Thanks for any help.

You should be able to live in Astoria on that income, though you would have to keep track of your expenses. Generally, you need to make 40x the rent for a New York apartment, unless you are dealing with an individual landlord who may or may not allow a lower multiplier. On $60k, that would be $1500 for a maximum, but in parts of Astoria, you could find an apartment closer to $1000/month, so you should be able to find a good apartment in that range. Not maximizing your rent right now would help to keep expenses in check, and would stretch your budget to allow for some breathing room, so I'd look at all types of apartments, not necessarily those at the upper end of the range.

Astoria has never been popular with the hipster set, nor has it gone through waves of gentrification, since it was not a dangerous area that had been rebuilt/rediscovered. It remains a neighborhood that is neither too trendy or posh, but one that offers convenience and safety.

Hello, I am a CDN looking to move to NYC in winter/spring 2010. My line of work is in the music/media industry and specialize in syncing songs to film/tv/video game/ads. I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row and am curious how other Canadian's made this happen in the most efficient way possible. My current situation is finding out how to get an American social security number. Can I get one before finding a job or T1 Visa?

I am also interested in hearing any stories from other Canadian's (particularly in my industry) who have successfully moved to the US (NYC). I am hoping to troubleshoot any future speed bumps and figure out what I need to tackle first, other than the obvious... finding a job.

...and as for finding work in my industry, does anyone have any suggestions on the best way for a Canadian Citizen to get their foot in the door? Should my resume also have a NYC address/contact info?

Thanks in advance!

I can't imagine he wants a T-1...but then who knows. Maybe an H-1B_visa is more what he had in mind.

Or a TN Visa, which requires a valid offer of professional employment?
