I'm considering taking a job around 170th st and Ogden Ave and was just looking for a heads up on how safe it is. I'd be working till 7 or 8 pm every day and driving. From what I've heard the area's not the greatest, but I can get by if it's not too bad. Any input would be appreciated.
Highbridge is one of the poorest most rundown neighborhoods in the Bronx. I wouldn't go there at night if I could avoid it.
That being said, I haven't been in the area too much to really know it well so take what I say with a grain of salt. I don't know how safe it actually is because I don't go there. Hopefully someone else here with more knowledge can answer your question better.

It's a bit shady in the daytime, don't know about the night. ...used to take the bus to Yankee stadium from Washington Heights and the route crossed this area.
It's the hood. It's not Brownsville but 7 or 8 pm is kind of pushing it to be out in the street around that area. I'd say take the job and do it if you have confidence in your street smarts and haul ass out of there when you finish your shift. I know that area very well, if it's any matter to you, it's heavily populated by Dominicans and Blacks. So there will be a lot of Spanish restaurants and bodegas of course as your only choices for lunch since I doubt you'd walk all the way downhill to Jerome ave. I'd honestly wouldn't even worry about it say you left by 5pm. Just as a cautionary note, a coworker of mine had their Honda stolen by 167-168 Nelson ave about a month ago. (But that sort of crime happens everywhere)

If you gotta ask then you're already uncomfortable in my opinion.

Ogden is a very run down, cluttered block. There are buildings right on top of each other, and a lot of people hanging out. It has very blatant drug dealing (out in the open) and a high crime rate. I do not like to venture out to those blocks in the W 160's-W170's west of say Edward Grant, gentrification from Yankee stadium has not hit those parts yet. Plus, there is a couple of large housing projects (Highbridge Gardens, Sedgwick houses) nearby.

Highbridge is one of the worst neighborhoods in the Bronx. I absolutely despise it. The above posters are right. It's an open-air drug hood. Lots of hills, liquor stores, chicken places, 99c stores. They have this huge, like east coast swap meet there in the summer. Household items all out in the open, not in a store. Highbridge has nothing of legitimate value. In that area, everyone knows everyone, so a outsider, they'll know. The hood has a very, very, depressing feel.
is there abandonment in HB? was there abandonment there in the 70's and 80's?
